It's on Festival Scope, Natasha.
Ingrid Bergman is brilliant as always, 4 stars entirely for her and her alone-- the filmmaking and supporting characters are forgettable
"You are as known for what you do not do as for what you do" - Kathleen Turner Love this lady
the more I think about this film, the more I love it. Truly brilliant in the most subtle and introspective way...
so horribly underwhelming, I am in a state of shock at the attention this so-called greek new wave is geting.... It is absolutely bewildering.
not on the bandwagon...
Lusciously filmed and conceptually interesting... but... something is missing.
meaningless-- devoid of sincerity & not remotely provocative-- what A BORE. SNORE.
An exquisitely sensitive film by a filmmaker who truly delves into the human condition in a way few can...
how do I find this film?
Ridiculously heavy handed and ultimately, a gratuitous BORE.
Comparing this film to Michael Haneke's work is misleading-- this is more like The Idiots part 2. It may contain "shocking material," but most of it feels immature and ultimately uninteresting and heavy handed.
Not particularly brilliant or illuminatingl, but this is a fine movie with some depth from a director who I think has the potential of getting better with time... This is her best work.... I am curious to see what else she has in her
One note...
If I could give negative stars to this shallow film, I would! Get ready for my scathing review!
I adore Guillaume Depardieu, but I simply couldn't get into this film. The badly synced instrument playing drove me nuts. I tried.
where do I find this film?
A film about a wounded stage actress struggling with alcoholism and desperately clinging to her sense of motherhood, "Applause" echoes "Opening Night," and "Woman Under the Influence," but with a contemporary immediacy that is rare. Not to be missed by anyone who has a chance to catch it in their city, this film is cinematically and conceptually rich, with an intense and profound performance by Paprika Steen.
Way too much hype for a film so ordinary.
hilariously terrible
Awful and insulting.
Far better than anything else at the theatre lately...
I am not certain if my issue is more with Solondz's films or if it is with the audiences that hysterically laugh and seem to worship them... Finding humor in human suffering makes for interesting material, but I generally find his work (including Life During Wartime) a bit foul and always short of having any kind of depth or meaning.
NO THANK YOU.
A well-directed, intelligent political thriller with witty subtext and a memorable sense of atmosphere. Though carrying Polanski's usual undercurrents of misogyny and anti-americanism, it is a strong and thoughtful work--definitely deserving a viewing.
A compelling movie-- would have been much better without that annoying, overly sentimental, borderline maddening go-to track by Phillip Glass (who I am beyond sick of)
utterly boring
Jason Byrne is a phenomenal filmmaker!
A deeply moving, beautiful tour de force. I haven't seen a film more stunning in a long time.
This film is seriously over-rated. Yes, it's gripping and suspenseful and I personally like that it's made by a female director who can formally outdo most other action movie counterparts.... but Bigelow's portrayal of Iraqi civilians is as bad as the Fox 11 news... they are reduced to being bumbling foreigners, most of the time blurred in the distance. Had she given them more of a voice--the film would have worked
wish I could give zero stars to this revolting monstrosity
