Hi ERIC ------What an interesting list of favorite films! Love that you gave DANZON a 5 star rating.
Thanks for the follow! :)
Documentarian Bryan Gunnar Cole produced a good roughly one-hour documentary called BOOMTOWN that explores the Suquamish nation in Washington state and its seasonal economy of fireworks sales. Often, banned fireworks are sold to Washington residents in the run up to the Fourth of July holiday, and Cole's film reveals how local vendors struggle to make ends meet on the Port Madison Reservation. The documentary was aired on the POV series on PBS in 2002, and has had a few television screenings since its premiere. Mubi.com does not list Cole or BOOMTOWN here, but details about the documentary can be found at PBS.org at the POV site: http://www.pbs.org/pov/boomtown/film_description.php.
SIFF 2011 has come and gone, and although I didn't attend that many films this year, I've been recently thinking of films I've seen in past years at SIFF. One obscure film comes to mind is Jean-Marc Brandolo's beautifully shot road film CAPONE (2004) about a man in France who is quite taken with a race horse named Capone and takes him to compete in a track race in Finnish Lapland. It's a journey that lingers in some of the scenic villages and country-side in Finland. The film, it seems, sadly never made it beyond limited festival circulation and a broadcast on French TV5 Monde. It would be terrific to see this on DVD or screened again.
Here's what I found online about Capone:
