ZDT's elliptical narrative is a troublesome one. The film propagates the deceptive argument that torture yields truth and facts, and it erases the contextual foundation of the events of 9/11 springboarding into a decade-long conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. ZDT's script assumes a superficial reading of these events while tracing a CIA rookie with Cover Girl good looks trying to crack Al Qaeda, except it's personal.

Danzon is a wonderful film -- I think it's underrated and is unfortunate that exposure to this film is nearly nonexistent by now. I saw it many years ago on - gasp! - VHS tape as a rental having missed it when it was theatrically released in Seattle for a limited run. I'm happy to see it out on DVD and have introduced the film to family and friends who have been receptive and have enjoyed finding this hidden gem. Maria Rojo is wonderful in the lead and I like the romantic mood surrounding the music, ballroom dance, and the nostalgic elements evoked in the narrative. At the same time, it's a progressive story about how one woman can aspire to greatness on her own terms, asserting independence, and defy traditional social archetypes expected of women in a machismo-dominant culture. It's a very feminist-forward film from Mexico at a time when this was unheard of.

Documentarian Bryan Gunnar Cole produced a good roughly one-hour documentary called BOOMTOWN that explores the Suquamish nation in Washington state and its seasonal economy of fireworks sales. Often, banned fireworks are sold to Washington residents in the run up to the Fourth of July holiday, and Cole's film reveals how local vendors struggle to make ends meet on the Port Madison Reservation. The documentary was aired on the POV series on PBS in 2002, and has had a few television screenings since its premiere. Mubi.com does not list Cole or BOOMTOWN here, but details about the documentary can be found at PBS.org at the POV site: http://www.pbs.org/pov/boomtown/film_description.php.

SIFF 2011 has come and gone, and although I didn't attend that many films this year, I've been recently thinking of films I've seen in past years at SIFF. One obscure film comes to mind is Jean-Marc Brandolo's beautifully shot road film CAPONE (2004) about a man in France who is quite taken with a race horse named Capone and takes him to compete in a track race in Finnish Lapland. It's a journey that lingers in some of the scenic villages and country-side in Finland. The film, it seems, sadly never made it beyond limited festival circulation and a broadcast on French TV5 Monde. It would be terrific to see this on DVD or screened again. Here's what I found online about Capone: Ken Eisner's review for Variety: http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117924404?refcatid=31 SIFF 2004 Press room photos of Filmmaker Jean-Marc Brandolo and actor Gerald Laroche promoting their film Capone at SIFF: http://www.siff.net/siff2004/press/detail.aspx?id=25
