I was one of the few people who actually liked “Broken Flowers” and that one he did a couple years ago with Issach De Bankole and a nude Paz De La Huerta (who’s character was named…. Nude). I forget the name of that one though for some reason.
“No Country for Old Men” is to the Coens what “Match Point” was to Woody…. A reinvention even though No Country wasn’t as good and is a tad overrated IMO. However, to me it feels “different” than most other Coens movies.
Then again so did “A Serious Man”.
Most non-cinephiles only know of No Country because of Bardem’s hair.
The extent of De La Huerta’s “acting” in “Limits of Control” (now I remember the title :p ) was essentially be naked and pout. She’s only in a few scenes but that’sthe extent of her role.
It’s not a perfect film in the least but Bill Murray’s cameo towards the end as essentially the film’s only real representation of Americans (revealing any more is a major spoiler) is worth the price of admission alone.
I’m one of the film’s few supportersand I forgot the dang title earlier hehe.
The Tree of Life
Super 8
Meek’s Cutoff
Hugo Cabret
The Descendents
Shame
We Need to Talk About Kevin
J. Edgar
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (remake)
A Dangerous Method
I’d like to make this “my thing”. Every once and a while, I’ll roll off 5 films available on Netflix Instant and I will watch the one out of the 5 that you the people choose. It’s kind of like “American Idol” only with less dawgs and more Godards. Ok? Here are the first 5 films chosen by me pretty much randomly….
Harmony and Me (Bob Byington)
The Man from London (Bela Tarr)
Summer Lover (Robert Crombie)
A Woman is a Woman (Godard)
Pop Skull (Adam Wingard)
I own about 4 of his movies (and rented “Going Shopping” and “Irene in Time” in the past) but I’ve never gotten around to watching any of them. Where should I start, if I even should? I know he’s a director most either love or hate. The 4 movies I own are….
A Safe Place
Always (But Not Forever)
Deja Vu: A Love Story
Venice/Venice
I’ve met David Lynch several times and he’s a great person to talk to and to hear talk. I wonder though, will he ever make another film or was “Inland Empire” the end? (even though technically there was a doc called “Lynch” that many believe he directed under a pseudonym that came out after Inland Empire)
I know he’s said he’s done with “film” (Empire was shot on video) and has moved on to music but is there at least a possibility of another Lynch film/movie?
I’m looking forward to her upcoming film “We Need to Talk About Kevin”, John C. Reilly’s most dramatic role in years. People today don’t realize he was once known as a gifted dramatic actor.
It looks much better than the similar “Beautiful Boy” even though I like Michael Sheen.
I haven’t seen Morvern Collar but I loved Ratcatcher.
Forget the overrated “Juno” and “Hard Candy” and REALLY forget her in “Inception” (she was that film’s weakest link), I personally think Ellen Page’s performance in this underappreciared film from Bruce McDonald is the best performance she’s given to date.
Easily one of my favorite films of last year, Simon Rumley’s “Red, White and Blue” is one of the most chilling films I’ve ever seen and Noah Taylor is amazing in it.
If you’ve seen it (and you really should, IMO), what did you think?
From now on, I’m going to rate the films from 1 to 5.
Cinema Verite (Driectors: Springer-Berman and Pulcini)
4/5
enjoyable look at the beginning of reality television with a good lead performance by Diane Lane. It wasn’t perfect but it was entertaining enough fluff.
NEDS (Director: Peter Mullan)
1.5/5
Exactly the same as every other Scottish film I’ve seen. They must really have a youth gang problem over there. Boring and highly unoriginal.
Last movie you saw and rate it about 2 years ago
Last Night (Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington-starrer)
9.5/10

I saw it opening day. Liked it a lot although, like you said, it wasn’t perfect.
Better than “Sucker Punch” but that’s a whole other thread :p

SCIENCE-FICTION AS A GENRE - WHICH ARE THE BEST FILMS AND WHY? about 2 years ago
“Moon” (Duncan Jones) is by far one of the best recent sci-fi films.
Jones also directed the more conventional “Source Code”

I didn’t love the film, I didn’t hate it either…. It was well made and well acted…. It just didn’t hit the rightchords FOR ME.
I know alot of people hate on the film because they don’t like Alejandro but I’m indifferent towards him.

Wes Anderson about 2 years ago
I used to love love love Anderson but have lately grown tired of his schtick. As I’ve grown as a film watcher, he hasn’t grown as a filmmaker IMO.
“Ceremony” by Max Winkler has gotten alot of comparisons to Wes Anderson’s work.

“Permanent Vacation” can’t be worse than Richard Linklater’s debut (I think it was called “Learning to Plow by Reading Books”. I also own that on DVD)
I watched it years ago but really didn’t care for it
sorryfor going off topic

Who do you think is the best director of the three: Guy Maddin, Atom Egoyan or Bruce McDonald?
Also, what other Canadian directors do you like?
I like all 3 but it’s close between Maddin and McDonald for me. I liked Egoyan alot but “Chloe” was horrendous.

I forgot Cronenberg was even Candian.
However, I feel it would be a landslide if he was included.

“Adaptation” when I was 15.

I thought it was going to be a romantic comedy.
