Emily Doom: Filmography

Once Were Warriors

All I wanted to see was REVENGE. You think it can't get worse and it just keeps going downhill. I can't handle all of this melodrama. It's terrifying and arbitrary. I like that this film encouraged Maoris to seek psychiatric help, but it just places the blame on personal family situations rather than corrupt political structures and decisions.

Cléo from 5 to 7

My first Varda film was Vagabond. I was expecting something similar but didn't realize that I should have taken an auteur approach. The main characters in both films are so different. Cleo, a bourgeois, pop princess is almost the antithesis of Mona, the street smart rogue. Perhaps this maps Varda's progression through different feminist concepts. I want to love this film, but I cannot help but hate Cleo.

Tokyo Drifter

Amazing, quirky style. All I could think about during my viewing was Tarantino, Tarantino, Tarantino. Did he take this and catalog each shot only to reproduce it into Kill Bill? I think it's great he pays homage to Japanese cinema in the 1960s but he might have even taken too much. Either way, this film was spectacularly composed. I also loved detecting the influence of the western and elements of noir.

Tokyo Drifter

Gosh, this was just beautiful.

The Road

I just got back from seeing this in theatres. My tough-skinned 32 year old brother and I had to hold back our tears the entire movie. There were points when I prayed for comic relief because I could not handle the intense dramatic elements of this film. Haven't read the book so can't make any comparisons but overall it was pretty enjoyable.

The Road

Just another Hollywood film trying to be indie. The whole thing was like a two hour long Gap commercial. It's a shame I paid $10 to see this in theatres.
