well, only so far that it is about wordy twenty-somethings and has a regular of Stillman’s stock company in a supporting role.
but it’s equally related to a bunch of those mid-nineties independent productions. they’re of the same genre, made around the same time, and have 1 actor in common, so it’s not “waaaay too much like a Whit Stillman film.”
Kicking and Screaming has a lot more in common with a film like Sleep With Me than with a Stillman film in terms of style and common actors.
I can’t think of any Selznick productions that I really love (Notorious probably comes closest). I just watched Nothing Sacred recently and can honestly say it was one of the most unbearable screwball comedies I’ve ever seen; but I haven’t been able to pinpoint if that had more to do with Selznick or with William Wellman, who probably shouldn’t have been helming a screwball to begin with.
^^Fukasaku’s Yakuza films are a lot more hard-toothed than Suzuki’s; Fukasaku never went in for Suzuki’s style of flippant dark comedy, but rather focused on social commentary (which can get pretty tedious at times). You might, however, want to check out Blackmail Is My Life (1968), where Fukasaku does work in that genre of campy Japanese gangster comedy, not a great film, but an enjoyable one.
