The time has come for me to come clean about my addiction to Mike Leigh's television films. No one I know can understand a word of his dialogue, which makes me implode due to my inability to discuss their brilliance. If one is to look at Dekalog, one understands the awesomeness of Kieslowski. He took the time and place he inhabited and made transcendent television films, which can be viewed as masterworks alone or as a whole. The same is true of Leigh's t.v. projects. Although the characters do not live in the same apartment block, they do live in the same sphere of Britain, in class and surroundings. They are neighbors, each attempting to survive in a similar environment. The main difference I've observed in Leigh's work is style: imbuing this sense of constant teetering between farce and tragedy which ultimately makes the tragedy all the more devastating, while Kieslowski focuses on the simplicity of story and image to explore intense tragedy through moral and faith-centric questions.
