Yes, I have actually already seen 'Melancholia' and knowing its director's past flirts with controversy I think i know why our boy Lars was flirting with controversy, which makes big headlines and possibly (outside of Latin America - though the film has a release date for half of it - Brazil which hasn't been changed) the kind of box-office it would never get on its merits. This is a supreme exercise in boredom and lack of direction only partially redeemed by ideas we glimpse every now and then as having been the foundation upon this film would succeed, flounder or fall into oblivion. Oblivion would have been my guess despite the superb the acting of Rampling, Hurt, and Kier (hindered by Sutherland and the brothers Ska). Overall? Forgettable. So I get the "pay attention to me the genius" complex our boy Lars suffers from regardless of what shit comes out of his mouth or beauty that shines thrugh in his films. Now this will get talked about. I fell into that trap myself. But I still think it would be kind to the film and the actors (some of them, at least) to forget it. Let's hope Lars boy can get back to being innovative, moving and poignant. I hope he proves me wrong on my "he gave in" assertion.
