Stupidly over the top, but wonderful with it.
In my opinion this is far superior to Squid and the Whale. Nicole Kidman turns in a great performance, and the script gives a good indication of the depth of Noah Baumbach's talent. Well worth a watch.
I want to love this film, but I just don't. It doesn't know what it wants to be; it seems to have aspirations as a 'serious' character piece, but it doesn't fulfill them because it relies too heavily on cheap jokes and poorly constructed set pieces. Which is a shame, because there are some great moments - it just feels scrappy and unfocused.
Absolutely beautiful. Tear-jerkingly sad from start to finish, but without feeling cynical or 'button-pushy'. The 3D is really well judged; it's a great film that just happens to be in 3D, rather than being overdone.
