Apparently Fassbinder considered Querelle to be his most important film up to that point. He died while he was still editing it, if I remember correctly. I agree it is a minor work, the subject matter and protagonist left me cold. Fassbinder does a pretty good job of translating the surreal quality of Genet's work. Although I haven't read Querelle, I did read Our Lady of the Flowers and found similarities. Since Fassbinder's death was accidentally, it would have been interesting to see what direction he would have gone in, if he eventually made a transition to Hollywood films like he was planning. I Only Want You To Love Me, Jailbait and Women in New York I'm eager to see.
