I’ve done some pretty good damage so far, more to come still:
Eisenstein: The Sound Years
John Cassavetes: Five Films
Pierrot Le Fou BD
The Life Aquatic
Seventh Seal BD
Band of Outsiders
Contempt
A Woman is a Woman
Le Samourai
Le Cercle Rouge
Simon of the Desert
Night and Fog
Short Cuts
Elevator to the Gallows
Berlin Alexanderplatz
I previously owned:
Fear and Loathing
Royal Tenenbaums
Benjamin Button
Any recommendations as to what else I should pick up? Probably going to grab Algiers, Ran, Third Man BD (once it arrives) and Wings of Desire BD. Other than those I’m up for suggestions!
One of my favorite movies. Clint Mansell’s score is amazing. I would love to see this on Criterion Blu-Ray! I have the regular WB DVD release of this and the long behind-the-scenes extra on there is great, but if Aronofsky has more to offer I would love to see it!
PS, bravo to the creator of the fake Criterion cover!
Peter: I wouldn’t say there are any sci-fi elements. There is a certain amount of mystery surrounding The Prince and the whale, but sci-fi is a stretch. Regardless, this film is amazing. Don’t waste another second and start watching!
Could someone PM me with a SurrealMoviez invite? I appreciate it and look forward to voting in the Director’s Cup! I also submit myself as an alternate manager with Alfred Hitchcock since no one picked him back up and it seems like a lot of our most active members have only seen a handful of his films.
Well, I figured I wouldn’t come in here to run over the same old Hitchcock movies that everyone has seen before. Plus, this is one of my favorites! I haven’t seen Io Island yet, so I’ll be watching that soon.
If enough people watch the match, I don’t think Allen is making it out of round one. Szinbad was amazing. Although, Manhattan is my favorite Allen film, and he is quite popular….so we’ll see what happens there!
3 matchups completed so far. But I have watched one out of the two films for 5 matchups. My film watching time has been severely limited lately, but I’ll make it work!
I was about to suggest this! I think it would be very helpful. It seems the DC topics get kinda hard to find. We should still leave some sort of notice to all members that the Cup is going on so we don’t lose voting due to lack of visibility.
It turns out there aren’t actually invites, you just have to wait for registration to open. Currently, I believe registration IS open, so give it a shot!
Bump. Also, we really need a Directors’ Cup tab. There are at least 6 threads right now, and there will be a lot more once all of the separate film discussions begin.
Zach, you just need to realize that you are at a cinephile website. All of the films you have listed, regardless of the fact that your friends have never heard of them, are considered mainstream here. I would HIGHLY recommend you join in with the Directors’ Cup (look for the threads). We will be voting in a month on the matchups and this will be a great way for you to expand your film knowledge. Otherwise, all of the films suggested to you are wonderful. It seems that you would appreciate Bong Joon-Ho and Gaspar Noé’s work.
Noé is known for Irreversible. I’d recommend that. Be warned though, it is very explicit in nature.
Regardless of how you resented someone’s comment, just move on and learn from the people here. JJ&E is a VERY knowledgeable member on these forums, so don’t let a single snide remark turn you away from what the real goal is: expanding your cinematic knowledge.
And once again, check out the Directors’ Cup!!!
Very good film. A bleak portrait of the times in post-USSR Eastern Europe. I see the similarities with Tarr, however I prefer Tarr over Bartas. I enjoyed the party scene a lot. I really couldn’t shake the feeling that their joy was going to be short lived. I’m glad that Blue K pointed out that the little boy was a younger representation of Bartas’ character. I saw the visual comparison between the two but wasn’t sure if it was just a coincidence. This matchup will be very hard for me to vote on, luckily I still have a couple more days. 8/10
I certainly hope he is not retiring, but the potential of him mentoring young filmmakers sounds good. At the very least it seems like there is a good possibility of him going out strong since The Turin Horse sounds amazing.
