i don’t quite understand why many people hates it. sure, it’s a bit pretentious and long, but it’s not that bad. just check the witty dialogs, the magnificent editing, the fabolous directing, the ambitious theme; which is about ego, and the hip scoring. well at least, give him some props for his bravery at making a gangster flick in an experimental approach.
i think the rejection that he had for revolver really affect his way at filmmaking. just look at rock n rolla. it’s good, but there’s something missing about it. i think guy ritchie is afraid for another rejection. so, he made rock n rolla simpler than he wanted it to be. as a result, rock n rolla is just another good guy ritchie flick, which can be as great as lock, stock, and two smoking barrels or snatch if he made it with his old optimistic side and without the fear of rejection.
bottom line, revolver is simply guy ritchie’s great comeback film after his dark days of swept away.
easily, paul thomas anderson’s punch drunk love. an adorable yet unique love story. and, i was surprised by adam sandler’s acting skills. that also made me smile.
wait a second, no one mentioned 2001: a space odyssey? yes, when that black color filled our monitor screen. anybody else realize what is that black color doing in the intro of the film? and of course, that pre-historic part. no need to mention it, i think.
An artist painted the sky black
A dilettante said that it’s such a drag
But the devil didn’t care
All he wanted to do was glare
So he wore a full red suit
A pair of torn brown leather boots
And a wayfarer sunglasses
Finally, he kissed his missus
He levitated himself to the meeting location
The main gate is guarded by the two headed lion
After a long walk, he entered a room
A God, a prophet, a martyr, and a fake has just created a doom
God Himself, Jesus Christ, Joan of Arc, and Icarus all became loons
The devil felt that he should be better at home watching cartoons
Everyone in the room but the devil bursted into laugh
He wished his ear was deaf
The devil sat between Icarus and Joan of Arc
Suddenly the room became very dark
Someone in the room turned on the projector
The devil felt like a soap opera actor
God unleashed His droning sound
The other people in the room were suddenly bound
The projector projected a sentence which read, “When should we blow up the sun?”
Then everybody except the devil picked up their gun
Yes, everybody except the devil
He is not a rebel
He is just afraid
Afraid of the great big raid
The devil suddenly ran
He didn’t care if he’s going to be banned
As he ran, two big holes accidentally showed in the back of his red suit
Those two holes exhibited two white wing roots
Then he cried
He cried while he once again flew to avoid the flirts of the black coloured sky
“Black sky, goodbye.”

hello, kunam88! why don’t we talk about this year’s jakarta international film festival (jiffest), eh? yesterday, i have watched indonesian short films and i just got home from edwin’s blind pig who wants to fly. and i’m looking forward for tomorrow’s international short films and lukas moodysson’s mammoth. have you seen that?
blind pig secara teknik sama konsep udah bagus, tapi outputnya secara menyeluruh rada hambar klo menurut gw. padahal metafor2 yg dipake udah bagus. sayang bgt outputnya hambar.
wah iya tuh, the headless woman. tapi sayangnya gw blm beli2 tiketnya soalnya jam stengah 10 malem sih mainnya. rada berat jg brgktnya. hehe.
klo gw sih dulu di bandung ada toko namanya mondo video. isinya kopian2 tapi bagus2 bgt. gw nemu cul-de-sac, l’age d’or disitu. tp skrg udh tutup. kurang laku. klo skrg sih kbnykn rental di subtitles. hehe.
@chromeragnarok
wah, moon bagus bgt juga mnurut gw. best film of 2009? still too early to say that don’t you think? maybe one of the best up until now. but sam rockwell surely gave us a tour de force performance, eh? and as for primer, it’s a great mindfuck for the brain. no wonder it won sundance.
@joshua w
i have seen jermal. it’s a great and powerful indonesian film. it has a deep indonesia feeling in it, thanks to the beautiful cinematography. didi petet acted wonderfully in the film, don’t you think? and as for the forbidden door, yes the ending kinda ruins it. but that won’t change my decision to love this film. the unforgettable christmas dinner scene, anyone?
@kunam88
where’s garin nugroho’s daun di atas bantal (leaf above pillow)? as far as i’m concerned, that’s the only indonesian film that has ever screened at cannes film festival. the actress who acted in the film, christine hakim, became the only indonesian that has ever be a jury at cannes a few years later. it’s a great indonesian film that can educate the audience about the conditions in indonesia.
here’s a good news for us indonesian and the people who loves the forbidden door:
the forbidden door has been chosen as one of the best films in the year 2009 by a well respected magazine sight and sound.
anybody got the chance to watch jamila and the president? is it good? it’s indonesia’s official entry for 2010 oscar’s best foreign language.

ah, synecdoche new york. a film where life imitates art imitates life. that’s one of the best film of 2009 for sure. unfortunately, it wasn’t released on oscar season. that film should appear on many oscar nominations, including best picture, best actor, best director, best original screenplay, and best cinematography. but i won’t get my hopes up.
@rajiv ibrahim
yes, hopefully a coens film, another cormac mccarthy adaptation, and a film by jason reitman could raise 2009 to another level. eh, kirimin gw listnya dong, jip. kaga bisa gw kmrn mau nyoba donlot.

basterds is surely not his best. for me, it’s his third best after pulp and reservoir, which are impossible to match. i surely can’t wait for nine. it’s kind of a remake to fellini’s 8 1/2 right? and 8 1/2, in my and many people opinions, is one of the finest film of all time. but that could be a boomerang for the film as the audience will surely compare it to 8 1/2.
not to mention, spike jonze’s where the wild things are. i’m waiting for that film to come out since years ago. and then, it got canceled. hopefully, it won’t disappoint me when it come out in indonesia. i got an idea! why don’t we watch that film together at a cinema, eh? sounds nice, doesn’t it? you all located in jakarta, right?
