about cinema

A truly good film creates its own artistic universe, its own set of rules for using the language of film. The way the language relates to the narrative is probably where the real value lies.

Davril, I don't have time to post anything much on the Nosferatu thread at the moment, but I noticed you watched Warning Shadows. Did you connect it to Nosferatu? Albin Grau was influential in the creation of both films, even though this is a bit vague on IMDB, and a fan of the occult. I definitely feel the way the Shadows are used connects to the constant references to shadows in Nosferatu and would be worth exploring further. I'd need to rewatch Warning Shadows myself, since my memory of it is a little hazy on precise details, but your fresher viewing might provide some insight.

Where do you really get all this old classic movies from? I can't find at least 40% of what you've watched.

Nice thread about Intolerance. I haven't yet seen that Griffith - I'm saving it for a rainy day - so I couldn't comment on your ideas, but I appreciate the thought that went into it. It's good to have another fan of the silent era on here, and maybe I'll catch up with you in another thread when I have something to contribute sometime.
