The girls who adore Twilight devotedly and without a hint of irony tend to be kind of crazy anyway. Most of the millions of its fans out there realize to some extent how very stupid it is, but like some of you have already mentioned, they’re just in it for the emotional gratification. Edward is to Bella’s drug fix as Twilight is to the entire preteen female world…
I only get really irritated at others of my sex when they start gushing about the literary legitimacy of the series. I read the first book, hesitantly… and of course it uses basic words and sentence structure since the middle-school girls it’s aimed at aren’t likely to take time away from texting their BFF’s to plow through Dostoyevski, but honestly the writing is even worse than the subject matter. I’m just sad that so many people are reading that and considering it legitimate literature – the same goes for the Da Vinci Code and any other screamingly popular, deeply idiotic/ill-informed nonsense of the sort.
I guess it could be considered positive that this crap is inspiring so many people to actually read, but I’d almost rather they didn’t read at all than consider Twilight mental stimulation.
