Just got The Passion of Joan of Arc and Ran (blind purchase). Also just got a 32" flatscreen HD TV and am very excited about watching these films on my new TV!
Love and Death in Long Island, with John Hurt and Jason Priestley. 3/5 It was a potentially good movie that didn’t want to make a commitment to telling a story.
I lost myself while watching District 9. I usually check my watch once when I am in the theater, just to see at a certain point how much time might be left to tell the rest of the story. Didn’t do it with D9.
Lars von Trier. I saw Dancer in the Dark, and I am convinced he hates people, women especially. Dancer was the ony film I ever saw that reduced the quality of my life. Truly hateful.
Maybe I’m crazy, but when I was little I remember going to see a film that was shown every year at my elementary school, in the evenings, and I think it was called The Monster in the Boiler Room. Has anyone ever heard of this? I have never, ever heard of it since then. Perhaps it was a film that was locally shot (Pennsylvania) but never released.
I’m a Believer – the Monkees from the end credits in Blood Simple; the Danube Waltz in 2001: Space Odyssey; Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon from Pulp Fiction.
Bertollini’s The Sheltering Sky. I was amazed at the 90 degree turn the story took, and the ending was transcendant. It really defied traditional narrative in a way that was eye-opening.
Star Wars, Shakespeare In Love, Forrest Gump, anything directed by Cliff Robertson (Mystic River contained the most incidences of overacting I’ve ever seen, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was a whitewash of the book).
The Last Picture Show was the first B&W film that I can remember seeing that was “deliberately” done in B&W. It’s one of my favorite films of all time.
1. and 2. Inglorious Basterds
3. and 4. This is England, The Class, Frozen River
5. Zodiac

Ace Ventura Pet Detective (they made me watch it) and Being John Malkovich. Glad I went back to revisit the latter (I was just tired the first time).

Godard vs Truffaut; personal opinions? over 3 years ago
I always love Truffaut, but Godard is very polarizing. Some of his movies I love, and others I can’t stand, which is very puzzling to me.

I can’t imagine Cloud Atlas being done as a movie. If it were done, and faithfully, it would only appeal to a small minority of intelligent viewers.
