Yes, do bump 'Five' up the list. There's something incredibly beautiful and envigorating about it. Def. a high-up-there AK flick. I kind of see this and 'Ten' as companions to one another (I'm sure I'm not alone), and therefore sometimes can't decide which I think is better, but why not have both, eh? I think those that say 'Five' is more a gallery piece/installation are missing the cinematic aspect of it. But like Warhol's 'Empire', it could reasonably be shown anywhere, perhaps?... Not that I've seen any James Benning (yet - I'm holding out major hope; you're right his work is sadly unavailable in the UK) but I'm guessing that you'll dig 'Five' I can sense some parallels with Benning from what I've read... When I first saw 'Gerry' I actually really hated it. But many moments (chief among them the sequence where the two Gerrys walk in tandem into dawn, or thereabouts) stayed with me consistently; popping into my head for days after at the most random of times. I rewatched it and immediately loved it. Go figure! It's clearly a see-it-two+-times deal, heh. The 'death trilogy' (or quartet if 'Paranoid Park' is involved) are some of his very best films. I read a great piece in Film Comment recently about 'The Silence of Lorna' and was reminded of how good it was. And 'The Son' was amazing. I've put 'Rosetta' on my online rentals to watch, from what you say here. It's def. next in line... I'm intrigued by 'Irma Vep' now, too; 'Summer Hours' was stunning... And the rest on your list here I want to see. Although I saw 'Red Desert' recently and really didn't get the deal with it, this is after spending years trying to track it down (bummer!), but I'm pretty sure I'll like 'L’Eclisse'. I'm hoping '24 City' will get a release here - however limited. 'Still Life' was high up on my picks for personal best of '08 for me (#2) - in full agreement about Jia being one of today's best, and most fascinating, filmmakers. Eurgh, we've had freak weather patterns here, too. Major flooding. Wind that wants to rip the skin of the bones. That kinda thing. But all's good in general. One more day of work then the weekend. I've stacked up a few possible gems to watch. Sky+ (like Tivo, I think?) is full with: 'Comrades', 'Paths of Glory', 'Import/Export', 'The Rain People' and 'Awaara'. At least two of these are over 3 hrs long. Sheesh, I'd love a 4-day weekend this week! Have a good one, Morgen. (Oh, and let me know how you get on with any of those films we I mentioned!)

Yes, 'Five' is great. It keeps popping into my head as a favourite of his. A lot of different thoughts run through your mind when seeing it - the ultimate people- (well, and object-) watching flick! A lot about it is spellbinding (some may say dull though, heh); less human than 'Ten', but incredibly beautiful. 'Close-Up' was amazing, and 'Where Is My Friend's House?' is up there, too. Thanks for the kind words - one of the reasons I added you to 'follow' was your list. Trying to eke out similar tastes with folks here works best I've found, so far. Not sure what you may have already seen from my list, but big personal favourites (this changes almost seasonally!) inc. 'Safe', 'Voyage to Italy', 'Dawn of the Dead', 'Killer of Sheep', Humanity and Paper Balloons', 'On the Town', 'Edward Munch', 'Inland Empire', 'The Apartment' etc. Most that are on my faves here I guess. Too many to list! But a few that aren't on here (not sure why) are: 'Japanese Story', 'The Forest for the Trees', 'Gerry', 'Nothing But a Man', 'Portrait of Jason', 'The Beguiled', 'Kill, Baby...Kill!' and most Cronenbergs! How about you? Any that you may think I need to see from yours? Hope you're having a good weekend...
