Michael Mann-style almost 2 years ago

Seeing all this “Mann-love” on an English language site brings a tear to my eye…

Just one thing which I am not sure if anyone has brought up, but with most Mann-films I have had the pleasure viewing, Mann ends the films with a scene which has his protagonist “realising his life has changed forever”, with that in mind, I have always seen the last shot of Public Enemies to be very interesting, it was a confrontation between Marion Cotillard and Stephen Lang. Even when I saw it the first time I said to myself that it almost felt that Mann was on the side of the old school lawmen and Bale was actually the “Pretty Boy”…

visual and auditory abstraction.

Miami Vice at the informant’s apartment. Crockett for a brief moment stares out the window to the sea and all ambient sounds got attenuated, and just ask quickly, he snaps back into focus and joined the fray.

Public Enemies the escape when they were in the car, after JD had to let go of his fallen comrade, the ambient noise was again attenuated.

Ali the watching tv moment in the hotel room.

Showers are also a big thing.

The insider Wigant’s hotel room moment.

slightly OT

Mann is like jazz, but more Bebop or modal of the 60s, accessible but different
Malick is jazz at the Lincoln center with orchestra
Lynch is like free jazz. meets the sex pistols
Soderberg is Wynton Marsellis
Scorcese is opera

Spielberg is AOR
QT is oasis
Ridley Scott is Prog Rock
Tony Scott is Bowie

…now back to the scheduled programme.

Michael Bay is Guns and Roses
