Hi, I just saw your post on Akira Kurosawa page, you were asking, which one of non-samurai Kurosawa move is better to begin with. Well, I could definitely say that you should start with Ikiru or Rashomon. They are both amazing movies. It's been a long time since your post, I hope I was able to help.
Hey Thomas, I also saw your post on the Tarkovsky page. I agree that it is always good to start chronologically with a director, but just in case you don't find Ivan pulling you in to Tarkovsky, I just wanted to say that the film that did it for me was Andrei Rublev. That was actually the first Tarkovsky film I saw and watching it the first time was a pretty unforgettable experience. The slow reveal of 'wow, I didn't know I was getting my self into such an incredible film.' I have yet to watch another film that has the same affect on me. My other favorite is Stalker. I hope you enjoy his films! I hope I didn't raise your expectations too high...
Hello Thomas, I noticed your post on the Tarkovsky profile page. I personally would reccommend to start of with Ivan's Childhood, Tarkovsky's first major film and move up chronologically. This way you can get a feel for what you are in for. And keep in mind Tarkovsky's films are steady paced and thought peices but if that is the kind of films you are looking for then watching his films should be quite exciting. My top 5 would be: Stalker, Andrei Rublev, Mirror, The Sacrifice & Solaris.
