Took me forever to get to this, after reading the book more than 30 years ago. Style and satire in an operatic register, will be a joy to re-watch, especially on blu-ray.
Absurdist to such a degree that it can be hard to find the political satire that is surely at the heart of this utterly strange film. Fascinating but also meandering.
Too long and overstuffed with drama, this is still an incredibly-acted ensemble piece. This group of friends feels genuinely connected, however imperfectly. Bravura performances from everyone, and the last half hour will pummel your emotions.
Just about perfect. Everything that Woody Allen and the Coen Brothers have ever done with a detective story is here already. Hilarious and gripping at the same time, I was mesmerized the whole time and didn't want it to end.
Uruguay is like the Finland of South America, and Whisky is a work of Kaurismaki-an genius. Deadpan and all the funnier (and also sadder) because of it, Whisky is a gem with strong performances from the three leads. I like the fact that so many things are left unsaid and unexplained in the film, like the characters' lives extend far beyond the frame of the film, and that we're just spying on them for a few days.
Best play ever, man.
Wonderfully written and dense with tantalizing ideas which never quite resolve themselves. And that's a good thing.
