Well, I liked it. There, I said it. I was troglodyting in the himalayas and had no knowledge about the hype et. al. Maybe that’s what helped. I came to it with no expectations or even desire to see it but it happened to be on my hard drive for 3 months and I was bored.

Limit genres, limit possibilities. I am absolutely not a fan of comic book super hero films, but this definitely impressed me. It wasn’t even about that, really.

Where are my tweed jacket and black rimmed spectacles for which to see the Truth?

PARIS, TEXAS is to be Criterioned! over 2 years ago

That cover is awesome. I love this movie very much. Don’t go to Paris, Texas though. There’s a resurgence of the KKK!

MIxed Reviews?!?! about 1 year ago

My sentiments exactly. I thought this movie was PERFECT. Of all the supposedly great films I’ve seen, designated as so by the “canon,” this is really the best movie I’ve ever seen. Haha, I know I will catch a lot of slack for feeling that way, but I just do. I was not a huge fan of Amorres Peros, 21 Grams etc. But this movie is in a league of its own. The main complaint is that it’s overhanded with the depression factor. But, hello people, if you put down your iphones and get off of twitter and stop distracting yourself with bullshit, you’ll notice that yes, in fact, some people’s lives are this devastating. I don’t necessarily look at it as depressing, as much as I look at it as a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit. Life can suck this bad, but somehow, people pick themselves and keep living it until th end. It’s about the desperation, the perseverance, and tenacity it takes just to fucking live in this world. And let me tell you, this world is fucking awful. But there is a beauty in one’s ability to transcend all the terrible things that it throws at them. This movie spoke to me unlike any other piece of art. I can’t think of anything else.

Also, so on point with your mention of Kieslowski. One of my favorites. Also a touch of Doestoevsky suffering to it, yeah? Someone give these people some Oscars!

It wasn’t shoved down mine. I think people only have that reaction when they haven’t been through anything.

MIxed Reviews?!?! about 1 year ago

My mother was abandoned by both of her parents, raised by oppressive grandparents, had a her first child when she was 19, married at 23 and had her second child, became a widow within four years after her husband was run over by a train at his job, became pregnant with me then was abandoned by my father, then she almost died from a blood transfusion, then she married a crackhead and divorced him, then we lost our house and had to move in with my great-grandfather, her oppressive grandfather (sending us from middle class life to poverty), her mother reappeared much later in life (around age 60) and several years later she suddenly died of colon cancer. Her father died not too long after that. Not much closure anywhere. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

What’s the purpose of all that? I don’t really know. But she’s done the best she could in life and is the strongest person I know, and I’ve been submersed all up in that shit, and it didn’t even happen to me. And when she calls me on the phone and we laugh together, and she tells me that everything will be alright — that’s beautiful.

People are so used to a three-act Syd Field structured screenplay, that they don’t even fucking know how to read a poem anymore.
