Enter the Void

Noe describes Void as a "psychedelic melodrama". I could have done with more psychedelic and less melodrama. And a more modest running time.

Meek's Cutoff

Michelle Williams killed it, really understated performance in this baby. Best part about this movie is the soundtrack.

The Robber

Pretty good, I liked it a lot, but not nearly as good as Revanche.

Van Diemen's Land

K seriously, no US distribution? The hell? I want, I want.

The no US distribution thing is weird. I first found out about it by watching the trailer on the Apple site (which is entirely geared to advertising the US release schedule). But yeah, this film is staggeringly beautiful (not the first word most people would associate with prison colonies or cannibalism). Auf der Heide and Redding deserve massive praise for fighting through the mud to get this film made off their own backs and Ellery Ryan turns-out world-class cinematography (the final shot is painterly, to say the least). www.foec.wordpress.com

Enter the Void

i have no idea what star rating to give this thing. somewhere in there is a near-perfect visual odyssey through death, but theres about fifteen minutes in excess of not-so-necessary stuff drowning out what is otherwise the most incredible cinematic experience i've had in my entire life. knowing gaspar, the love hotel scene goes on for as long as it does most likely so that you can jack off to it.

Dumb & Dumber

The best comedy of the nineties, and an integral part of my childhood. Worst synopsis ever, by the way.

The Animatrix

Pretty fantastic collection of styles and stories here. My fave is Beyond. For some reason, the only thing I've ever watched that's made me cry. Too many geek points there?

I agree about the previous still, it was perfect, just like this movie.

Watchmen

I had trouble taking this seriously as an adaptation. Every time Zack Snyder had his trademark CGI blood and gore in there, I wondered why the hell it was necessary. I couldn't help but picture him reading the graphic novel and thinking to himself "That was a cool part, but it would have been awesome with more blood and slow motion and stuff!"

Il divo

Woo-wee this is hard to keep up with for a yank like me. Still...intricate, rapid-fire, wonderfully directed and shot, subtly stylized, and so so so well-performed. Toni Servillo is a fuggin badass. Fantastic achievement.

i did my best to shrug off the bad music cues. but as soon as vincent cassel started tekken 3-ing with those skinheads, i had to turn this off.

Ghost in the Shell

I'm usually not that into anime, unless it's Miyazaki, Tekkonkinkreet, or, ever since last night, Ghost in the Shell. This movie is my cyberpunk wet dream, and I'm aching to watch the second one. Alas, it is not available on netflix instant. Soon...

Antichrist

This movie was the perfect storm for me. Ever since watching The Wicker Man (original) a few years ago, I've been waiting to stumble upon another satisfying film that touches on Pagan imagery/ideas, and this delivered thoroughly. Not quite to compare it to The Wickerman, though. Different league. Anyway, I liked this one a lot.

Thirst

One of the best things that Park Chan-Wook did with his vengeance trilogy was show us that revenge is always messy and never black-and-white. With Thirst, he very successfully shows us that the same goes for love. Meanwhile, he somehow completely rescues the vampire film genre from its pop-culture doom. If anyone could do it, it would be him. Love ya, Park.
