Has there ever been a bad Mike Leigh film? over 2 years ago

I didn’t like Happy-Go-Lucky. I thought it was a well made film with good performances, but I disliked the main character and how over-the-top she was. I felt that she ruined the film by being a character that had to throw a quirky comment for absolutely everything that happens around her. The best scenes in the film were the darker and more intense scenes like the scene with the homeless guy and the scenes toward the end with the DE instructor. I like Mike Leigh’s darker, weirder stuff. Two of my favorite films are Vera Drake and Naked. If Happy-Go-Lucky were more in the style of those I would have found it more interesting.

I thought Armageddon was the worst until I watched Equinox.

The Auteurs' Fake Criterion Covers over 2 years ago

Somebody has to do one for the English made-for-TV nuclear holocaust film THREADS! I saw the cover that was made for THE DAY AFTER and now I’m really interested in seeing what someone would do for that.

Favorite porno movies almost 2 years ago

You mean, like, legitimate films that are also adult films? I love the films of Bruce LaBruce, especially Hustler White, The Raspberry Reich, and Otto, or Up With Dead People. Sure, they’re gay pornos, but I think that they offer a lot more besides hardcore eroticism and penetration. I actually found both Hustler White and Otto to be very emotionally involving films in a lot of ways. I was especially struck by how uniquely LaBruce depicts schizophrenia and obsessive relationships. It doesn’t hurt that the men in several of his films, minus Skin Flick, are also very good looking.

Aside from that, however, Devil in Miss Jones is a must. Definitely a masterpiece. What I especially liked was how director Damiano decided to choose a relatively normal looking woman for his star rather than choosing a stereotypical porno actress.

Hmm, what else? Caligula was okay. I found it funny that Peter O’Toole’s performance in that was one of his best performances I’d ever seen of his, and yet not only was he in the film for barely even ten minutes, but it also happened to be one of the most disastrous big budget epic films ever, and the fact that it had so much sex and depravity in it made it even more ridiculous.

Lets see, The Italian Stallion with Sly Stallone was pretty funny. I don’t know, I don’t think it’s a bad film. It’s badly acted at times, but at least the soundtrack is good and the plot is at least somewhat interesting in a sort of 70s sleaze kind of way. You gotta admit that some of the lines in that film are pretty classic.

Forced Entry is good if you like disturbing films in the vein of Taxi Driver, Combat Shock, and I Stand Alone. I can pretty much guarantee that Forced Entry will leave you feeling pretty damn violated. Don’t bother watching it, however, if you’re looking for a sexy film. That film is about as far from erotic as a porno can possibly be without it featuring illegal depraved sex acts. It’s not likely that you’ll like it, but it’ll definitely be shocking.

Do the films of Catherine Breillat count? If so, Romance is one to check out. I thought it was a pretty intense little film. I liked it, but it’s a lot like Forced Entry in the sense that it’s not exactly what I’d call erotic. In fact, it’s more along the lines of films like Ken Park, 9 Songs, Shortbus, and In the Realm of the Senses. I guess I wouldn’t call any of those pornos, but I know that some people do so whatever…

Anyone else see Precious yet? almost 2 years ago

It’s surprising to me that so many people found this film so hopeful. I found it utterly hopeless. It came across far too fantasy-like for me. A film with this kind of subject matter needs more delicate treatment. Lee Daniels is talented, but I felt that his directorial choices were deeply misguided.

Did anyone here besides me find Mister Lonely to be reminiscent of Sweet Movie?
