I Usually like or dislike a film immediatly. But, i don’t know why, it happens to me that the Pixar movies don’t convince in the act. I always remember the case of The Incredibles. God. I hated it everytime i saw that intro. But i just love it now.
Rushmore is another in this list. Some Godard’s movies too =)
God. A LOT of movies.
Begining with An American Werewolf in London, Argento’s movies like Bird with the Glass Feathers,Suspiria, etc,.
A few films life The Hunger (Tony Scott), Public Enemies (Michael Mann, c’mon!) Blindness (Fernando Meirelles).
Blindness specially because the novel by Saramago wasn’t more than genius piece of art.
- (500) Days of Summer
- Antichrist
- District 9
- Sin Nombre
- Away we Go
- The Maid (La Nana)
- Coraline
- Thirst
- Up
And that’s all for the moment. In the next days i’m gonna watch a lot of 2009 movies, like An Education, Precious, Invictus, Mary and Max, Goodbye Solo, Where the Wild Things Are, The White Ribbon, Un Prophete, In The Loop, The Limits of Control…
If i didn’t add movies like Moon, Julia, Paranormal Activity, Departures, The Hurt Locker it’s only cause they didn’t convinced me.
I almost forgot to mention that the Oscar season is plagued with that deception feeling.
2008 was the year of dissapointment for me.
I didn’t like Gran Torino, Changeling, The Reader, Milk and a lot more.
The worst is that those are the movies who received more media attention.
Who dissapointed me the most i think is Cronenberg. I can’t stand seeing movies like Rabid, Shivers, Fast Company… Has anyone has such a bad beggining?? (besides master Uwe Boll xP)
I’m just starting with my Criterion Collection xP but neither of them has dissapointed me (Vampyr, Night and Fog and Grand Illusion).
i wish some of you could reccomend me some great Criterion movies!
I’m interested in Solo con tu Pareja by Alfonso Cuaron or The Lower Depths (by Renoir and Kurosawa).
Don’t forget Cronenberg, finally stepping away from movies like eXistenZ and doing some real work like Spider, A History of Violence and Eastern Promises!!
I also agree with von Trier….i would love to say Gaspar Noe is the greatest of the decade but he didn’t do a loooot of movies.
yeah, if that’s what he means i don’t think he remember’s the apparition of Tarantino, Linklater, Haneke, von Trier, Ferrara, Lyne, Burton and a lot of guys we ALL know.
Can i mention another one? “Die Hoehle des gelben Hundes” (The Cave of the Yellow Dog, 2005). Just beautiful. And if i mention that one i can’t leave behind “Ingen Numsil – Die Geschichte vom weinenden Kamel” (The Story of the Weeping Camel, 2003). Both films by Byambasuren Davaa.
I do like Doubt but there’s obviously a problem with the direction. The idea was traslate the play to the screen, but wasn’t more than a copy-paste process.
Same thing with Watchmen.
This take us to create the topic Bad “Adaptations”.
They should see the Larry Clark’s movies (Bully, Kids, etc), Lukas Moodysson’s, Bresson’s entire filmography, Chaplin movies for entering in the silent cinema…
And a bunch of movies like The 400 Blows, Murmur of the Heart, The Story of the Weeping Camel, the Kirikou movies, Ladri di biciclette, The Straight Story, Whale Rider, In America, Official Story, Ikiru, Le Trou (The Hole), It’s a Wonderful Life!, Ordet, The Tin Drum, Half Nelson, The Visitor, Secrets and Lies, All or Nothing, (500) Days of Summer, AND Pixar’s, Ghibli’s, and Aardman’s films
The best sequence i’ve ever seen i think is the ending of Modern Times, with Chaplin and Paulette Goddard in that road…
Others that i love are
- the ending of City Lights again with Chaplin,
- the scene of the re-birth of the wife in Ordet (The Word, my favourite film from Dreyer),
- the ending of Dancer in the Dark,
- the mother-daughter reencounter in Secrets and Lies,
- Gregory Peck in the final trial scenes in To Kill a Mockingbird,
- Henry Fonda in every scene in 12 Angry Men,
- the moment of the great revelation in Il y a longtemps que je t’aime (I’ve Loved you so Long),
- the ending of Control,
- the woman running in the snow looking to dump the unwanted child in 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days),
- Theo Faron and Marichka running after the baby in Children of Men,
- the ending of The Man from Earth in which i was OoO!!
- the father trying to get off his baby in L’enfant,
- the ending of The Girl in the Café (an awesome Bill Nighy),
- the fantastic ending od Sideways,
- Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love. The scene of his rage attack in the party with her sisters,
- the ending of Perfect Blue…
A mi personalmente me gustó.

Others like The Brothers Bloom, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, The Hangover, Funny People aren’t thaaat funny. For me obviously.
