With all the expectations I had for its cultural significance and, or so I heard, visual quality, I was awkwardly disappointed. I don't even see how Québécois would like the picture all that much.

Well I think it's because the Quebecois are not known for stupendous cinema, that they chose a random film (and not a very good one) as the best of the bunch.
