i think these have some of the most inventive as well as the most lavish packaging in the collection, which is wonderful since the films the packages represent are all deserving of such great treatment.
in the end, it all comes down to licensing. if the companies who own the rights to these movies dont want to sell to criterion then we’re out of luck. personally, id still like to see some great public domain films like ‘the trial’ get a criterion release. a lot of the films mentioned (‘mean streets’, ‘zodiac’, etc) are big sellers, so i doubt the owners of the rights would want to lose the income by handing them over to criterion.
out of the directors mentioned, i think ‘badlands’ and ‘dogville’ are badly deserving of a criterion release. as well as fincher’s ‘the game’, which i thought shouldve already been added to the collection.
id say half of my dvd collection is criterions and virtually all of them were blind buys except for ‘the third man’ and ‘the 39 steps’. the only ones id say were sort of underwhelming to me were ‘the river’ and ‘before the rain’. i can see why both are thought of highly and i actually enjoyed them from a film-making standpoint but their storylines just didnt really do much for me. ‘the river’ has beuatiful camerawork though. i guess i just went into it expecting another ‘grand illusion’ or ‘rules of the game’ and ended up being disappointed.
