i was surpised to have enjoyed this one as much as i did considering most people are of the opinion that this is his worst film. i personally have liked all of his films equally for different reasons. the only thing i can say is that some of the early short films are kinda iffy but Tati was still developing his own comedic style back then so they are highly derivative.
this is one of those films that a person either loves, or it is the equivalent of watching paint dry for them. thankfully, i belong to the former.
great movie, e x c e p t i o n a l transfer by criterion. god its like you are right there in the room. i just have the dvd, so the blu ray of this would be scary good.
this film was kind of letdown. i was expecting another pierrot le fou i guess and got this instead. its basically a weird hodgepodge of spy movie/noir plot lines with random communist undertones. sounds great on paper, just the finished product left more to be desired. the film does have its good points, namely, the cinematography is great with the colors literally jumping off the screen, and godard is in top form.
best american movie of the last decade. best foreign film goes to city of god
I'm starting to think every Jules Dassin film is worth owning. Highly recommended for fans of noir films.
idk why, but this movie is one of the few that almost makes me cry.
apparently, even early fellini is good fellini.
i sometimes wonder why i still dont own this one. : /
a film noir in style before the french had even coined the phrase. sure the rules of the game is better, and renoirs best, but that is only by a fraction over this. i can imagine hitchcock having private screenings of this for inspiration for rebecca, shadow of a doubt, and other films of his. essential viewing.
i agree with the directors statement, about this not being a tale of horror, but a tale of anguish. very true.
great mob flick. i generally hate mob movies (goodfellas type shit) but this was a very slow building interesting variation that i found to be quite enjoyable.
i saw a butchered print of this, now i really want the kino edition.
really underrated film. so much so that if i wasnt already a clouzot fan i would not even know it exists. sure its your standard mystery based film, but its got a superb script with great acting and a masterful director. cant ask more from a film really.
i was in need of a good laugh.
one of the weirdest movies youll ever have the pleasure of seeing.
possibly orson welles greatest film. really wish criterion would put this out. soon.
my fav kieslowski film. some scenes have the most beautiful camerawork ive ever seen. criminally overlooked, with one of the stranger stories ever to be put to film.
my favorite of the trilogy.
not my favorite of the trilogy, but any kieslowski is good kieslowski.
one of the best films about war, along with all quiet on the western front. makes you wonder what all the fuss over saving private ryan was all about when films like these already existed.
not my favorite wilder, but the script reminds me of a tex avery cartoon oddly enough, so i can dig it.
wasnt sure if id like his early films, now i HAVE to see repulsion. : )
god what a piece of shit. easily the worst film ive seen in months.
my favorite carole lombard film. this film should be required viewing.
one of the most enjoyable films ive seen in quite some time. they just dont make movies liek this anymore.
carole lombard in top form. one of the best screwball comedies of the thirties, and i believe the first (could be wrong). i prefer my man godfrey, but this is right up there beside it in my opinion.
how is it that ive seen like 7 godard films before this one? very cool. its kind of overly silly but still very watchable. i mean, godard is best when hes full of whimsy and this film is essentially an hour and a half packed full of that, as well as all the inside jokes he could muster. very highly recommended.
this movie has some of the craziest editing ive ever seen. i was literally almost dizzy after some scenes.
this movie is right up my alley. i dunno if you know where my alley is. its between 3rd and 4th ave.
