Which Movies Have You Walked Out On? over 3 years ago

The only time I have ever “walked-out” of any theater was due to technical issues. There was one where I had to desperately use the bathroom, and once I mustered up the courage to stand up and shuffle past the row of people I just couldn’t bring myself to go back in, but I can’t for the life of me recall what movie that was…

I think Todd Solondz’ first feature “Fear, Anxiety & Depression” would be fantastic to see again.

Criterion too pricey for you? over 3 years ago

I have the complete collection. The Hitchcock set and the original Salo were the 2 that really stung. Everything else I justify paying because it “completes the collection.”

I’m stuck now. Even if I wanted to stop buying CC I wouldn’t be able to. How do you destroy something perfect and complete?

I buy mainly on Amazon and DVDPlanet and I keep my eye on Ebay and B&N, Borders just to make the best decision possible. Hi.

Criterion junkies here? over 3 years ago

It’s so odd that I’ve never actually met anyone in my real life who enjoys CC. I live in NYC, I just don’t really get out much due to work. When I’m off…being that I own everything…I spend a good deal of my time watching movies. So yeah, I don’t ever meet many other CC fans.

Where do all you hardcore junkies live? I have to rent a 2br apartment just so I can have the extra storage space for DVDs…it’s a problem. :-)

What's your Top 10? over 3 years ago

Well, I typed a brilliant response…and when I hit the POST button, I realized I had totally lost my signal and it all went bye bye.

Rest assured, you would have been amazed. sigh

I’d do it all over again if I hadn’t spent 30 minutes scouring my DVD collection to make up a great list…

breathless or contempt over 3 years ago

You know, I hate to admit this…but I’ve tried 4 times to get through Contempt and each time I just pass out around the 45minute mark. I absolutely love Breathless, it’s one I can’t live without. Always has been…but as it turns out, Contempt seems to knock me out.

Upon reflection, I’ve realized this is partly due to WHEN I choose to watch it. Breathless I adore, so I can watch that any-old-time. Seems that I tend to always pop Contempt in during the wee small hours of the morning. 1am-4am block. Maybe this isn’t the best time to curl up and watch that one if I’m already sleepy…hmm…maybe I’ll get back to you on this one tomorrow. I might have to watch it again tonight.

Then again, I adore Brigitte so……yeah, be back soon. It’s time for Contempt.

What is Kubrick's Most Under-Appreciated Film? over 3 years ago

I know I get mocked for saying this quite frequently, but I really really really really liked Eyes Wide Shut.

It’s probably the only time I can get past looking at Tom Cruise without retching a little. But for a final film, a last farewell…I really think it was beautiful. It stands on top of my list of faves by Kubrick. Jealous?

Directors that consistently make terrible films over 3 years ago

There is no such thing as a “bad film” in my opinion. If you look hard enough, there is always something redeeming about any film.

Worst Criterion DVDs over 3 years ago

Did I just see someone say they did NOT like: Shock Corridor? Carnival of Souls and the Suzuki films?

I’m sorry, I have to rethink my life now…I don’t know if I can read things like that anymore. It broke my heart into 14,562 pieces.

You know it's gonna be bad, but you watch it anyway... over 3 years ago

I always try to keep an open mind when approaching something I know NOTHING about. 9 times out of 10, if that’s the case I’ll read up a little on WHY this movie exists…you know, what the directors intent might have been…anything of any artistic value, etc etc.

I strictly avoid mainstream-silly movies. The big budget summertime things I’ll see, but all the mediocre ones that fill the cineplexes I just skip. I have very little time to waste on something I couldn’t care less about, so I try to always watch things that have SOMETHING of value.

Not to sound snobby at all…I’m referring to directors way down on the ‘artistic’ meter as well. I just like everything really. Everything but Stallone, Van Damme and that kind of brain-numbing filth. Why?

What Is Your Ultimate Bergman Film & Why?? over 3 years ago

I’ve always wondered where other people stood on his films. I find myself torn so often when I force myself to try and pick the “Top Three.”

I’m not even sure why I do such a thing, but for some reason I want to see what others think are some of his “top” films. I guess for the sake of argument, I’ll twist my own arm and say…

(in no particular order)

a) Wild Strawberries
b) Fanny & Alexander
c) Through A Glass Darkly

I totally forgot about Shame, I really liked that one.

The Seventh Seal…yeah, it’s a classic but I’ve seen it so many times when I sit down for time with Ingmar, I usually pick something else. Cries & Whispers is one of my faves as well. I don’t think I’ve seen one I disliked.

The comedic ones are a little disturbing to me though. I usually watch them very seldomly. Bergman = introspective, dramatic, beauty…not knee-slapping.

I have Shivers Region 1…it’s been released, just old and crappy looking. Criterion should really consider looking into that particular Cronenberg title…I’d pre-order that one. :-)

Why Does Hollywood INSIST Upon Remaking Flawless Films? over 3 years ago

I wasn’t even going to post this because the answer is clearly obvious, however I need to vent. I’m a lifelong fan of crappy, cheesy, indie horror films from just about any decade. My question is in reference to this growing trend to re-make films that were fine to begin with.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre?
Prom Night?
The Hills Have Eyes?
and the countless others I refuse to acknowledge…

I know the reason the do this is to fill it with pretty young stars, draw the teens back to the theaters and milk them of their $10. But what bothers me is that when I was growing up (1970s) I was taught to appreciate the movies the way they were. So are today’s teens completely incapable of appreciating something if it was released before they were born, or missing some teen heart-throb? Because that’s just simply depressing.

Sighs

Why Does Hollywood INSIST Upon Remaking Flawless Films? over 3 years ago

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You all made it worse!! Please tell me these posts are jokes and they won’t remake Rosemary’s Baby, Umberto D or any of these other titles. I will seriously jump from the roof of my house if someone remakes Umberto D. Oh lord that actually upset me. You people are brutal!

As far as Rosemary’s Baby goes….let them remake that 100 times. It will always suck because there will never be another Ruth Gordon.

Whoa…Wally is rocking me hard right now. What was I thinking asking such a stupid question, huh Wally?

I guess Wally doesn’t realize most of the original films mentioned here made tons of money, and still are….but I’m sure Wally knows best. Oh gosh, let me wrack my brain trying to think up something hard to challenge Wally since my previous question was just too far beneath him to even bother making a sensible response.

Gosh I wish I was as smart as Wally :-(

March 2009 Criterions over 3 years ago

Where is the information on the Kurosawa release and the Eclipse box set posted? It’s not on www.criterion.com so I’m curious where this information is coming from as I’d like to look at these items as well.

Marko…it would be criteria if we weren’t explicitly referring to the “Criterion” Collection releases for March 2009.

What was the first Criterion movie you watched? over 3 years ago

I don’t recall what the first Criterion DVD was…I had become quite familiar with many of their titles when they were on VHS, so I just naturally replicated my VHS collection and before I knew it…I noticed a recurring name. Then I looked into what other films they released on DVD and was hooked. This was back during the original 1-50 spine numbers, so it’s been a while. The first CC dvd I purchased was Alphaville. I liked that, so I grabbed the 2 Suzuki titles: Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter…and it’s basically been ongoing ever since.

The Blair Witch Project over 3 years ago

It was only really interesting to me during it’s original run. Basically when it was still being hyped and what-not. I watched it this past Halloween on TV and was pretty much bored by the whole thing. I think it’s one of those films that really have their most lasting effect the first time you see it, but upon repeated viewings they lose their thrill. At least that’s how it is for me, and I’m an avid horror flick fan…so, you know…it’s a pretty major accomplishment.

Also the snot dangling thing is just exhausted. Please don’t make me see that again. Ever. Thank you.
