Welcome to the site. I’m new here too and of course share your love of film. However, I’m only 19 and my passion is only growing. I hope discussing film with others, like myself, helps increase yours.
Certainly some, if not all, Charlie Kaufman films. Especially Synecdoche, New York. Also keeping it recent, In Bruges would be a terrific addition. Van Sant’s Elephant is certainly worthy. I’d also like to see some animated films get their due. Perhaps Princess Mononoke.
I’m from Vancouver, BC, so I am in a city where I get to be exposed to film of all kinds, but I don’t always have someone to discuss it with, so this site is truly special. Oh, and Steve from Ohio, Chasing Amy is one of my most treasured films.
1. Princess Mononoke
2. Ratatouille
3. Grave of the Fireflies
4. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
5. Spirited Away
6. Wall-E
7. The Iron Giant
8. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
9. Toy Story 2
10. Monsters Inc.
That’s my top ten list but I love so many animated films. These come to mind…
Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, My Neighbor Totoro, Akira, Little Mermaid…
Most television programs are so fettered by convention, that there isn’t much out there that is truly great. The following are the shows which achieve such a rare level of excellence…
All of Joss Whedon’s work (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly)
Lost
Battlestar Galactica
The Shield
The Wire
Freaks & Geeks
Arrested Development
Spaced
Six Feet Under
Twin Peaks
I certainly dislike some of his role choices, but only because he is so talented. His performances in Adaptation and Matchstick Men are some of the best I’ve seen.
Armageddon and The Rock are the only two movies I can claim to be unworthy of the collection. There are other films I don’t care for, but I understand their worth to others. I’m glad no one has mentioned Chasing Amy. I hate when it comes up in this conversation as it is one of my favourite films.
Shawshank Redemption, Godfather, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, There Will Be Blood (although it’s only loosely based on Oil!), Unbearable Lightness of Being, Adaptation., probably more I can’t think of…
There are a couple that failed to connect with me (Cowgirls…, Private Idaho), there are some good ones (Good Will Hunting, To Die For,) but the bulk of his material is truly brilliant (Mala Noche, Drugstore Cowby, Elephant, Gerry, Last Days, Paranoid Park, Milk).
for whatever reason, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” makes it into my conversations on a daily basis and I haven’t seen Robocop in nearly a decade. weird.
I just finished reading Roger Ebert’s “Great Movies” article for Magnolia. Some of Ebert’s best writing. Everything he says is completely on par with how I feel about the film.
Agreed Brandon. But with Milk it seems he has found a middle ground, where he can helm a mainstream film but give it the personal touch we see in his smaller work. Also, his Hollywood movies tend to still be a cut above the rest (in some cases).

Brilliant movie. Maybe not “best of all time”, but truly great. It’s my second favourite film of the year so far.

I have to admit I’m frustrated at being left out so far. This would literally be my number one spot on the internet if Canadians got cut in.

I agree with Snow Angels. I’d trust David Gordon Green with adapting anything.

More Canadian content would be a bonus but I really just want access to the Criterion film festivals each month. That should be priority…
Also, I thought Criterion had the rights in “North America”, not just USA…
