Von Trier is working his way through the film "genres", and with this entry of Horror, did we really expect anything less from him? Beautiful and ugly, this shows us contrasts between what is attractive and what is not, at least for us the viewer. The photography is amazing, the script is less then, the actors are beautiful, the actions they take towards the destruction of beauty are ugly and horrific.
Beautiful tribute to the american musical. With the skewed vision of the stationary camera during the musical dance scenes, where we are allowed to be as confused and uncomfortable as a going blind Selma, but comforted by the fantasy of song and dance. The handheld camera throughout gives us a fresh does of the reality. The money theme, and commentary on American desperation leads to greed, is a powerful one.
Interesting exploration of people's faith, and the different motivations for believing in a higher purpose and the love, health, and emotional education one can achieve from it. Works well with Von Trier's "golden hearts" trilogy which also includes Breaking the Waves, and Dancer in the Dark. The God, Sex, and Money theme of the trilogy are truly apparent.
