In addition to digital video becoming an indie mainstay, DV is becoming an outlet for big-budget fare. And not just wall-to-wall CGI fests. This is an exciting and scary prospect.
Just rewatched Richard III with Ian McKellen. This has got to be one of my favorite free adaptations of Shakespeare along with Throne of Blood and Chimes at Midnight. Anybody else a fan?
Admittedly, I haven’t seen enough Rohmer. But when I heard news of his passing, a few titles sprung to mind that define him for me. Not bests, but favs: Claire’s Knee, La Collectionneuse, and Pauline at the Beach
Anyone have some personally favorites? Recommendations?
Has anybody gotten a chance to see this? I just caught it at IFC.
I haven’t seen a film so joyful, stylish, inventive and playful in quite some time. Calling it a horror movie seems so limiting. It plays like a live action manga. But it really is horror and it shows you the possibilities of any movie, but genre movies in particular.
Yeah. I should have clarified. After I saw House (Hausu) I was thinkning about that ’86 House with a friend at work. I remembered the countless times I caught bits of it on SciFi when I was a kid.
I just caught Peter Weir’s The Last Wave. I had mixed feelings about it but the more I think about it the more I like it.
The film has got a quintessentially ambiguous ending. I’m usually skeptical of these mystery endings because they can come off as gimmicky or pretentious. But when they work, THEY WORK.
Anybody have some favorite unresolved or enigmatic endings?
I really enjoy super structured frames. I feel a problem with camera movement is that most films using a mobile aesthetic are aiming for some vague sense of engagement rather then trying to find a beauty or meaning in the shots themselves.
I’m curious what people think of Russian Ark since it is all movement. I think this kind of movement has purpose.

People get a chance to check this out?
I enjoyed it for the most part but I have some mixed feelings about it as a whole. It reminded me a lot of Baron Munchausen.
His dreamy, storytelling logic is so unique but not always successful for me at least.

His imagination is truly epic though I’m not sure how well the film has been doing.
I thought Zero Theorem wasn’t set.

The introduction of Heath was bizarre and scarily resonant.
Also, there is a strange immediacy to the film’s take on transcendence, permanence…

There is a big difference between Blu-Ray releases of films and HD streams of TV shows.

I like the BBC versions but this one nailed it with the soliloquies that break the fourth wall. I really felt culpable.

Hey guys.
@Daniel: like Glemaud said, it’s a 35mm print. Apparently, they unearthed some print that had never been shown.
I never seen such a beautiful print for such a slap-shod, ramshackle, gorgeously artificial looking movie.
@Adam: how was the Masters DVD, any cool special features?
@Dimitris: what did you think of it?
