Not bad, just not that great. the film needed to get deeper than it was. It should have taken a Wilfred-esque turn making Hesher a more rateable sub-conscience
At times i was a bit underwhelmed although i really didn't know what to expect, this film as very up and down. it always seemed like, just as the film was hitting a stride, it's feet were cut from under it. Which, after reading about the history of this film, makes perfect sense. regardless...it is a Welles' film, and really, can it be bad? i have been wanting to see this film for close to 10 years and thankfully i was able to record it on TCM. unfortunately and stupidly i deleted this after watching, not sure why. well, at least once in my life i was able to see The Magnificent Ambersons
Never thought Bjork could carry a film all on her own, but she does just that in Dancer in the Dark. ok, maybe "Carry" is a little much, but you keep watching because you feel deeply for this woman who seems too dim for her own good. All you want is for someone to stand-up and help her but, ultimately, everyone around her is as helpless as she is. not sure if the singing and dancing was completely necessary, some sort of other abstract direction could have been a better filler. but, i guess when you have an international singing star in your film, naturally you will want them to sing.
Lynch is like the Kafka of cinema; he places you in these far out, yet introverted worlds that easily resemble your most surreal nightmares. And, Eraserhead is the epitome of the previous statement
Great acting and a decent film. But, what is giving me reservations on really liking this film...it almost paints the nazis as a caring loving group who were simply misunderstood (a notion that is completely false). The film seemed to be attempting to make me feel bad for all of the nazi suicides, something i do not feel bad about.
The Wrestler is wrought with great performances and a completely original storyline, but, The story of The Ram is not a very uplifting tale. in fact, it is one of the more depressing and heart-wrenching films I have ever seen. However, this does mean the film is bad, it Just asks and takes a lot of you.
Oddly, this being his first film, it felt much larger than Steel Helmet. good flick!
Scorpio - a very underrated film villain.
pheeeewwwww (and exhale)....now that was a movie! I am glad i bought this because i really need to watch it over and over again.
I, too, am not sure why this film is hailed as a masterpiece. Very good? Yes, but it is no Citizen Kane. I guess the secret to this film is, you need to be french and very very wealthy.
Although you can tell this film was made on a very low budget, it still moved and breathed. I guess, because of the low budget, I felt like I was watching a recording of a play, more so than an actual movie. this made it hard to put yourself into the story's environment. Still, Steel Helmet was enjoyable.
I am looking forward to wathching this again.
I was not really scared at all while watching Picnic... in fact, I was kind of bored, especially during the first half. the synopsis claims that the movie is open ended on what actually occurred, well, that is an understatement. the story never gave you any real insight to a possibility, except for aliens...maybe. I am assuming this film was scary for its era, I do not think it has stands up today.
Probably the best acting in film history...
Solaris is slow, but not painfully so. The film dives deep into the human conscience and asks many questions on what it means to be human. Although the film was a mildly entertaining sci-fi romp, i do not not think such philosophical and existential questions can fully be experienced in film, therefore, I am looking forward to reading the book.
