SOUTHLANDER. A post-modern cinematic trip, with performances by Beth Orton, Beck, among other cameos.
In a city of desperate musicians, it takes a little bit more than talent to beat the odds. The MoleTron keyboard was Chance’s ticket out of town. With it, the gig and the girl were his. But in the Southlander game, you might get a little bit more than you bargained for. Earth people are ‘onto’ the sound of the MoleTron synthesizer, which Chance, the ‘Chosen One’ chases after.
Johnny To is great.
I haven’t seen “Sparrow” yet, but I saw “Exiled” and “Election 2” at a film fest in Buenos Aires and was impressed by his storytelling precision.
“Election 2” is like an Asian “Godfather”. Awsome shit.
Since we are on a Japanese wave, I’ll ride it and suggest:
Cha no aji (The Taste of Tea)
by Katsuhito Ishii
This film caught me by surprise last year.
Perhaps, on of the most poetic and contemporary films I’ve seen in a while.
Plus, colorful and wel constructed characters.
Hard to just choose one.
Films that changed my life forever.
Here we go:
-Being John Malkovich (Spike Jonze)
I learnt that no matter how random and bizarre an idea can be, you can always make it work.
A modern masterpiece in my opinion.
-Magnolia (PT Anderson)
I learnt the meaning of the word EPIC.
-Festen (Thomas Vintenberg)
I learnt about the power of storytelling and the freedom of new digital formats.
-Koyaanisqatsi (Godfrey Reggio)
I learnt that when people say “an image is worth a thousand word” they’re not kidding.
I also learnt that we are all going to hell.
-The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson)
I didn’t really learn anything. This films just talks to me.
-American Beauty (Sam Mendes)
Direction: check, Cinematography: check, Screenplay: check, Art Direction: check, Perfomances: double-check.
Just perfect.
-Network (Sydney Lumet)
Listen, I’ve seen this film for the first time a month ago.
Need more time to process, but fuck it’s changed my life.
Now that I finished writing this, I’m not sure if I’m answering your question…
I just randomly threw out films that did change me, or at least shaped me in some way…
It is hard to pick just one…
… awww fuck it. “Gremlins 2” changed my lifed forever. not kidding.
My new friend Rica and I, accidentally started discussing childhood films.
It is quite impressive how much these titles can shape your actual taste for cinema, or at least mine.
These films also tell a lot about one’s background.
Growing up in Buenos Aires, we mostly got north american films, to watch.
Although people had access to world cinema, it is far from what we have now.
I’m also fairly young, so my films would also denote certain aspects of my generation.
1. Back to the Future 2 (the second one is the real deal)
2. Koneko Monogatari (a.k.a. Las Aventuras de Chatran, probably my first cinema experience ever) – Masanori Hata
3. Gremlins 2 (omg how much I loved those nasty creatures!)
4. Ghostbusters (I ain’t afraid of no ghost.)
5. Never ending story (Atreeetyuuuuuuuu)
Oscars are complete bs.
The people I want to see win, never do.
I’m just so pissed that they didn’t recognize paul thomas anderson, for creating such a precise piece of filmmaking.
Hands down.
Jonny Greenwood for There will be Blood.
I can’t belive they didn’t give him at least an oscar nomination for best score…
..but then again… everyone knows the oscars are on a 1987-market-crash kind of thing.
PVC-1 (Colombia), by Director Spiros Stathoulopoulos.
I don’t think I’ve ever felt so much anguish and anxiety by watching a film.
Quite an adrenaline rush.
In my humble opinion, one of the greatest talents coming from Latin America.
The last film I saw was called YO, by a spanish first-timer called Rafa Cortes.
Due to my job I watch a lot of first films from nouvelle directors, and I have to say this stands out from the bunch.
I strongly recommend this one.
Actually, I’ll email Rafa and get his film for the Auteurs.
really? what a coincidence… I just went out to buy a pack of ciggies and ran into Rupert Murdoch. I introduced myself, talked for a while, and out of nowhere the dude just hands me the keys to his empire. He just had a fight with his wife because his job was consuming his life, he was a bit depressed. I opened up my pack of cigarretes and he recommended not smoking anymore since I will need my health to run NewsCorp. So I had my last one, got basic instructions. He told me that his desk has a bad drawer that needs to be fixed, gave me a black list of people which I will post on facebook soon, and his driver took me home.
I’ll need my rest tonight.
Big day tomorrow.
My first measure?
Buy The Auteurs & The Weinstein Co.
Otra. If you had to create a film cycle, exhibition, or playlist at an awsome cinamatheque.
What would your theme be, and which 6 titles would you pick?
THEME: Futurism
Prelude: La Jetee
1. Brazil
2. Stalker
3. Blade Runner
4. Back to the Future Part 2
4. Alphaville
5. Childen of Men
[UPDATE]
I’m adding The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy as a BONUS TRACK.
