The first time I watched this I broke out in a sweat motivated by suspense and excitement. The music, the long takes, and career making performances... nothing is written!
Gondry for the mainstream for sure. I love to re-watch this film after taking a break from it.
I clap for the wackiness! Such an original idea.
I'll stick with Eternal Sunshine, (love the Kaufman/Gondry duo) but this one was pretty good too. It's a little too long for my liking but it's still refreshing in it's uniqueness. I was attracted to it because Bernal was playing the lead. (Motorcycle Diaries!)
Bill Murray blocking that kid's shot made the movie for me. Kick ass soundtrack (Mark Mothersbaugh), script, and photography. Anderson and Yeoman, ASC gave birth to their recognizable mise en scene with Rushmore.
Baumbach certainly knows about divorce. This movie is sometimes too painful to watch but it's hilarious! Glad to see Robert Yeoman, ASC had a chance to move beyond symmetrical cinematography.
In terms of art direction and photography... no I didn't feel cheated.
I can't get the ending out of my head! If this were an American film, Pepe would have screamed, Gaby would have heard him, and it would have been happy times in the Casbah. But this is poetic realism. Compares well with Le Jour Se Leve.
Part musical no? Meet me at the las vegas club...
