- The scene in “Jules and Jim” where Jim visits Jules’ and his family, and then Jules rolls down the hill with Sabine.
- The end of “In the Mood for Love” is another favorite.
- I also love the beginning of “Last Life in the Universe,” right before the first opening credit title because it does a fine job in showing how depressed Kenji is.
- The part where that astronaut reaches Jupiter and starts seeing all that crazy stuff in “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
This was my second time watching the film and I caught many things that I didn’t catch before. First of all, this film is loaded with great compositions that really make this viewing experience not only meditational but a great lesson in how to use the space within the frame. Second, there is a lot of humorous moments that I didn’t notice before because I was not used to the slow pace of Ozu films — it was truly the first time I got laughs from a film in a while. This film has placed itself as one of my favorites of all Ozu films and I highly recommend this to anybody who hasn’t seen this.
“Spirited Away” really changed my life because that film is what lead me to watch all the films I have seen to date. After sitting in front of the poster in my 9th grade English class for months, I started getting really curious about it and I finally ended up watching it a year later. Never before have I felt a great amount of nostalgia from watching a movie and I really wanted more. So I decided to explore foreign films because I was so accustom to Hollywood films and I happened to stumble upon the right films at the right time: “Amelie”, “Oldboy”, “Chungking Express”, and others I can’t remember at the moment. Sometimes I wish I could experience all that again, but I can’t, which is why I absolutely love trying to show others films they have not seen — that comes closest to the nostalgia I felt before because I’m spreading the word about these wonderful films that I’ve seen.
My favorite actor has to be Tadanobu Asano. The guy has done a very wide variety of roles and he reminds me a lot of myself — especially in “Last Life in the Universe”.
One actor I just don’t like is Matt Damon. Something about him just doesn’t click with me.
It is a great film, but Jean Renoir’s style of filmmaking (based off of the only two of his films I’ve seen: this and Rules of the Game) doesn’t appeal to me that much. Something about it puts me off for some unexplainable reason, which is why I’ve never really been able to enjoy a Jean Renoir film as much as others have.
When I was in 9th grade, my English teacher had me sit in front of a “Spirited Away” poster that I looked at for the rest of the year. I was really curious about what it was about, so I ended up watching it in 10th grade. I had already been watching films on a regular basis, but “Spirited Away” is the film that led me to all the international film I’ve seen to date.
I don’t really cringe when someone says they love a film, but when someone I’ve never talked to before recommends a film to me, it’s almost always Donnie Darko.
I used to listen to the commentary for Last Life in the Universe every once in a while as I worked on my drawings, but I’ve been listening to ones for Blue Spring and Yi Yi recently.
