The Auteurs' Fake Criterion Covers over 2 years ago

My attempt at a cover for TEKKON KINKREET

Photobucket

I coudnt figure out a way to incorperate the films title to my liking so it would just be on the spine. Any fans out there feel free to download and edit this cover to see if you can figure out something cool to do with the title.

Twist Ending in the Book of Eli? over 2 years ago

@Lucas Stone, I agree that it showed both the positive and negative aspects of religion, but I think it weighed pretty heavily on the positive at the end of the film.

SPOILERS

And im sorry but the twist that he was blind was not only not brilliant but it was AMAZINGLY stupid in my opinion. After we left the theater a friend and I were discussing how horrible it was and he had a better explination for it than Eli just being blind the whole time (which if that is the case the film did a very poor job of setting that up [aside from a few offhand comments about smell and slightly better hearing than normal]) My friend seemed to think that he had gained sight in order to complete the mission at hand and then lost it as soon as the mission was completed. Either way the film was not clear on this and it was a cheap twist either way. It reminded me of the twist at the end of the film HIGH TENSION, a film that I would have liked had they had no twist but because of a poorly thought out twist I cannot enjoy that film on any level anymore.

Criterion Titles Going Out of Print over 2 years ago

All of these titles are going out of (Criterion) print at the end of March. They are all on sale ($5 off) on Criterion.com. It may be your last chance to grab these, I suspect the Pierre Le Fou Blu-Ray could be worth something down the line because it has only been available for a short time. I really appreciate Criterion releasing a list of these in advance, though I am sure Lions Gate (who picked up the films) is less than apreciative, haha.

Alphaville
Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Le corbeau
Coup de torchon
Diary of a Country Priest
The Fallen Idol
Forbidden Games (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Grand Illusion (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)
The Orphic Trilogy
Peeping Tom
Pierrot le fou (DVD and Blu-ray editions)
Port of Shadows
Quai des Orfèvres
The Small Back Room
The Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion and Essential Art House editions)
Trafic
Le trou
Variety Lights (Essential Art House edition)
The White Sheik

What was the first Criterion movie you watched? over 2 years ago

The first actual criterion published media (as opposed to a film that was on the label that I watched a different version of) was probably The 400 Blows on Laser Disc

I think the first DVD was either Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Naked Lunch

(all of this was before I had any idea what Criterion was)

May is an awesome month, I will certainly be picking up Walkabout (with the gorgeous new cover) and By Brakhage. I will most likely pick up M and Stagecoach as well.

Netflix streaming coming to Wii over 2 years ago

Sadly they will not stream at as high of a quality as through an x-box—roku—ps3—or blu ray player. It is a great option for people that already own a wii and dont want to upgrade.

Netflix has been really great over the past year or so.

Medium over 2 years ago

I would say neither is true.

The medium of film I take to literally mean movies made on film, in which case not all “films” are made on “film”

As far as the artform goes it depends on how you define art. Are all films meant to be “high art,” no, are some films “high art,” yes.

David Lynch Organic Coffee about 2 years ago

I had this coffee when it first came out. Lynch was screening Inland Empire in Dallas 3 years ago (I think.) He then had an appearance at Central Market to promote his coffee the next day. I went to get my Blue Velvet poster signed and to meet him, not planning on buying any coffee, but the sample coffee was so fantastic I bought a pound. It really is very very good coffee worth the price.

House? about 2 years ago

I think due to the fact this film is still making its round in art houses (backed by Janus I think) they are probably just sitting on it for a few more months. Having the poster for sale on their site seems to be a pretty damn clear indication that they will distribute the film, and it will be sooner than later.

The Best Films of *EVERY* Year about 2 years ago

Kilgore—

If I might ask, were you working from some sort of database of films released in a given year? If so could you link me to it? I have been meaning to compile a list like this but cant find a good source of credible movies released.

@max renn—Man I love THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY (I also like your user name)

Is PLAYTIME the only film in the collection that used 70mm (in part or all of the film?) If not I think anything using 70mm should definitely get the hd transfer treatment.

Peeping Tom and Psycho, a career destroyer and a career maker (possible spoilers) about 2 years ago

dont read if you dont want potential SPOILERS

I think the reason people were so much more outraged with Peeping Tom is because if the fact it DIRECTLY implicates the audience in the murders. We are not voyeurs watching as things happen, we are a part of why they are happening. The spectatorship is the most important part of the murders in Peeping Tom, it is not present in Psycho (in the film itself.) I think Peeping Tom is a superior film in many aspects and I personally prefer it to Psycho.

MUBI NEWS about 2 years ago

Seriously? What is everyones deal with having a huge problem with someone profiting from a service they provide? Do I think the name MUBI is stupid? Yes, Did I prefer the Auteurs (as a name?) Yes. Does that mean I have a problem with people trying to make a living by providing hard to find films to the public? No. Criterion and Kino and Masters of Cinema make money doing this, do we have a problem with them? No, we worship them for giving us movies we wouldnt get otherwise.

I agree it is shady that they werent completely open with all of this but seriously what does that matter?

I am a member of this site because they provide me with resources that feed my film geekdom and because of the other members of this site with similar interests. Not only do I not care if the people providing me with this service make money from it, I prefer it.

We arent 15 years old in 1982. Selling out is a childish concept. The second this service fudamentally changes for the worse is the second I join you guys in complaining, but that has not happened yet.

Macabre films? about 2 years ago

Your vague definition of what you are looking for makes it a little challenging.

I think much of Hammers Catalogue would work well for you, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. I personally LOVE Dr. Phibes films (though they are pretty post modern when it comes to macabre.) Masque of the Red Death fits firmly in this category as one of their best films.

As far as more classic films go maybe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (which is more of a german expressionism horror film but very dark and well done)

Frankenstien and Bride of Frankenstien are also classics for a good reason, though a bit (intentionally) campy, especially the latter of the two, they are well worth a viewing.

I work for FUNimation.

I will be brief/vague because I am not sure what I can/can’t say in regards to what we are currently doing on this project, but as far as I know we will be releasing it but it will be some time before it hits shelves in the US.

Has there been any word on whether or not Barnes and Noble will be having their buy 2 get one free and or their 50% off sale any time soon? I seem to remember it coming in July of last year.

B and N has a half off cireterion sale as well as a buy 2 get 1 free sale. If you have the members discount it can be a steal on criterions. They are way overpriced when they arent having sales.

Found Footage almost 2 years ago

Cannibal Holocaust is one of the earlier films that fits that mold (and one of the best in my opinion.) If you are looking for some really convincing gore from the 70s this is one of the best. It was so convincing when it was first released the Director of the film was arrested for killing actors.
