Keely: Filmography

Juan

I've long been a fan of musicals; 'Juan' might end up responsible for making me an opera fan as well. Cleverly updating and condensing the story of Mozart's brilliant 'Don Giovanni', 'Juan' alters the fates of several characters but preserves the spirit of the narrative. The cast's voices soar as they recite the updated and anglicized lyrics, the translation of which has been (for the most part) beautifully handled.

An Education

It's a shame this movie doesn't work, as the premise is very interesting and most of the actors (especially, of course, Carey Mulligan) turn in wonderful performances, but somehow it just wasn't... charming. It's hard to be whisked away like Jenny is when you're forced to spend the whole movie rolling your eyes at her determination to be as stupid as, say, somebody who climbs into subway tracks to retrieve a dropped postcard. David (the usually-less-bad Peter Sarsgaard) is just too SMARMY for this film to work. Given how stupid we already know her choices to be, WE have to be swept off our feet by this man too or else the film can't work. He doesn't, and it... really doesn't.

Greenberg

This is a great film. No 'The Squid And The Whale'--not by any means--but, in fairness, I doubt ANYTHING Baumbach does will ever again equal that film (it was his magnum opus, really). 'Greenberg' is painful to sit through at times, as per Baumbach fashion, but it's worth it if you can last to the end without the second-hand embarrassment hitting you TOO hard.

Kill Bill: Vol. 2

Kill Bill is a brilliant epic, but Vol. 2--while still excellent--isn't nearly as engaging as Vol. 1.

Lolita

I'm so iffy on this movie. Kubrick is a genius of a director, and usually I try to judge adaptations on their own merits but when you're working with a book like 'Lolita' you must take into account the original work. As A+ as the film is, it absolutely gutted the novel by aging up Lolita (thus changing the very nature of their relationship) and showing us Quilty at the beginning (eliminating a huge mystery source).

Is there a reason why La Boum--and, for that matter, the terrific if terribly-named LOL (Laughing Out Loud)--isn't on here?

'Anna' should be on here as well!
