A Serious Man ending over 2 years ago

As it has been stated before here, I certainly see the doctor’s phone call as a direct consequence of Gopnik’s decision to change the grade in the grade book, effectively taking the bribe. This is also the first time that Gopnik “does something” that makes him deserving of a consequence. One of the major motives of the film was the repetition of the phrase “I didn’t do anything” — be it in contribution to bad (e.g. the divorce) or good (e.g. receiving tenure) situations. Gopnik can no longer use this statement to rationalize his actions.

Regarding the tornado, I immediately saw iIt as a concise image summarizing the film’s violent feeling of a man’s life spinning out of control, and also as a signature of the Coens, putting a period on their story, almost saying “we’ve had control this whole time.”

It may be abstract, but those were my immediate thoughts on the tornado. I probably came to this conclusion because, as a musician, I have studied a piece of music by Bela Bartok in which he summarizes the entire structure of the composition in the last three or four measures.

AVATAR WON BEST PICTURE... over 2 years ago

I am so happy to come to The Auteurs for solace after this evening… I have thoroughly enjoyed this website through my first two weeks as a member and so very excited to find a community who wants to use their brain while watching movies!!

@user I too was horrified and embarrassed to see Haneke cut off so soon! I have yet to see his film, but even just seeing the trailer it comes across as a masterpiece. Of his films that I have seen, he certainly holds a place in my mind as a top filmmaker of the time.

I talked myself into holding out hope for the Globes for once more, but I don’t think I can do it next time!

Hey, at least they gave Michael Stuhlbarg a nomination.

Dumbing down subtitles. over 2 years ago

I just watched this film today and most definitely enjoyed it. My only problem with the film was actually that the dialogue was quite weak. The default setting being the dubbed version should have made me wary right from the beginning. I did attribute this weak dialogue to the fact that it was a translation, but I had no idea that the subtitles had been dumbed down this severely. Thanks for the link showing the differences!! These were some of the scenes that bothered me the most!

Thank goodness the copy I watched was a rental… I don’t plan on buying it now unless I am able to grab one with the original subtitles.

Too bad… this is such a great film!!

Animated Oscar Race: Up v. Ponyo over 2 years ago

I haven’t seen Ponyo, but certainly agree that Up is overrated. Kind of a bad title, also…

I also hope for Fantastic Mr. Fox to win, with Coraline a close second!

The Coen Bros. -- Best film over 2 years ago

1. A Serious Man
2. Fargo
3. No Country for Old Men

I can’t say enough how much I love A Serious Man. It is one of the most finely crafted and entertaining films I have seen. “Coenian” themes abound.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 1: John Carpenter (They Live) vs Gustav Deutsch (Film ist. 1-6) about 1 year ago

Just for accuracy’s sake, isn’t the final count 33-21 in favor of Deutsch?

I was kind of rushed earlier this week and didn’t have a chance to provide explanation for my vote (which was for Deutsch)…

I greatly enjoyed Deutsch’s Film Ist. 1-6. It was such an interesting break down and analysis of the many ways film is used and how it affects people. I’ve always enjoyed exploring experimental film and look forward to watching his other films in competition.

I was able to appreciate the idea and message of Carpenter’s They Live but couldn’t get past some of the poorly executed moments… I know, I know it is a B-movie… I have often enjoyed and respected B- and “cult-” movies like this, just not this time. This film has certainly not turned me off of Carpenter, however.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 6: Arturo Ripstein (Castle of Purity) vs Bernardo Bertolucci (The Spider’s Strategem) about 1 year ago

Arturo Ripstein (Castle of Purity) 0 – Bernardo Bertolucci (The Spider’s Stratagem) 1

Very difficult choice… I enjoyed these films just about equally. I loved the idea and atmosphere of Castle of Purity, but my vote goes to The Spider’s Stratagem for its rich story and camera work.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 8: Through and Through (Grzegorz Królikiewicz) vs. Las raquetteurs (Michel Brault) about 1 year ago

Grzegorz Królikiewicz (Through and Through) 0 – Michel Brault (Les raquetteurs) 1

Though I loved the visual style and composition in Through and Through, I had to vote for Les raquetteurs, which I enjoyed much more, with its playful style and superb presentation of the people and culture of Sherbrooke, QC.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 9: Jonas Mekas (Diaries, Notes and Sketches, AKA Walden) vs. Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon) about 1 year ago

Jonas Mekas (Diaries, Notes and Sketches) 1 – Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon) 0

This has been the most difficult call for me, as these are my two favorite films from the cup, by far. I loved every minute of The White Balloon… I felt the little girl’s desperation as she dealt with her crisis, which didn’t seem to be as important to anyone else, at least not for the same reasons. Absolutely wonderful writing and acting. Diaries, Notes and Sketches was an amazing experience for me. It is very difficult to explain, but viewing this extraordinary personal piece was quite inspiring on many levels. Though my vote is for Mekas, it is by no means a vote against Panahi!

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 12: Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) vs Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) about 1 year ago

Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) 1 – Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) 0

I enjoyed these films very much… both of them had several main characters, making it very interesting to scrutinize the relationships and pay attention to how the relationships were exposed to the viewers and developed within the story. Though I loved the score and the pacing of Wonderland, I felt that Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly was a more consistently solid film.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 1, MATCH 12: Edwin (Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly) vs Michael Winterbottom (Wonderland) about 1 year ago

Since this is such a close match and there is only half an hour left, I think we should be accurate with the count… I see the score as

15-14 in favor of Winterbottom

Can someone double check??

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 2, MATCH 6: Gustav Deutsch (Film Ist 7-10) vs. D.W.Griffith (Musketeers of Pig Alley) 12 months ago

Gustav Deutsch (Film ist. 7-12) 1 – D.W. Griffith (The Musketeers of Pig Alley) 0

I certainly enjoyed The Musketeers of Pig Alley… loved Gish and the fantastic staging of the fight in the alley. Just couldn’t stand up to the outstanding work of Deutsch in Film ist. 7-12, in my opinion. My favorite sections were 7 and 10.

DIRECTORS’ CUP 2011 VOTING, ROUND 2, MATCH 11: Jonas Mekas (Lost, Lost, Lost) vs. Ritwik Ghatak (Subarnarekha) 12 months ago

Jonas Mekas (Lost, Lost, Lost) 0 – Ritwik Ghatak (Subarnarekha) 1

It is frustrating that three of my favorite filmmakers in this cup have been pitted against each other in the same group! I am greatly enjoying Mekas’s work and was captivated by Ghatak’s rich film in this round… although Mekas’s Lost, Lost, Lost was another amazing cinematic experience for me, I did not enjoy it as much as his R1 film. Ghatak’s wonderful Subarnarekha absolutely wins my vote in this match.

I’m headed out of town for the next two months now, and I have done my best to watch some films in advance in order to keep active in the voting process. All the best!
