Sex in the movies: Disturbing? over 3 years ago

If contextually appropriate, yes. It seems there is more unnecessary nudity in films than unnecessary sex, not that I’m bothered by either. Ok, well, I am bothered if the sex looks totally fake. Make me believe or forget it altogether.

Which film has changed your life forever? over 3 years ago

The Seventh Seal – it was my gateway into world cinema.
Before Sunrise / Before Sunset – enduring love
Fight Club – my frustrated generation
Ikiru – working to live v. living to work, meaning & quality of life, death of family
Dekalog – life’s complications
In the Mood for Love – yearning, and those beautiful dresses!
Jules et Jim – I’m familiar with this situation
Avalon – the aesthetic, special effects, themes, et al.

Netflix; frustrations with over 3 years ago

Where I used to live, 25 minutes from where I am now, it would take 3-8 days to receive a movie after I sent one back. Now it takes 2 days.
My only current gripe is the Saved section. Mine’s huge. I’ll never know when, or even if, Netflix will have those movies in inventory.
Regarding mom-and-pops and libraries, I’ve been able to find some Criterion movies at those places, but no where near the titles Netflix has available. Netflix is invaluable to me. Plus, I don’t have cable (on purpose). Netflix is my DVD pusher.

David Lynch Overrated? over 3 years ago

He can’t do surreal as well as Bunuel, and he can’t do creepy as well as Cronenberg.
I totally agree, but I enjoy his films anyway. I can come back to them anytime and get something new.

New to The Auteurs? You Belong Here over 3 years ago

Coming to you live from Jarmusch’s hometown. I’m a contract negotiator by day, information architecture / user experience student by night.
I love, love, love watching and discussing films but don’t have any offline friends that share my tastes, so I’m extremely happy to be a part of this site.

Worries about the future... over 3 years ago

I’ve been looking for an intelligent, thoughtful film forum, and TA fit the bill. From what I’ve seen thus far, I’m not worried about the quality of discussion. There is a great divide between this forum and IMDB’s.

TOP BERGMAN over 3 years ago

There’s no way I could rank Bergman’s films. Perhaps Persona should be on top, though.

I agree with everything Max said, right down to the Michael Bay comment!
Fishing With John was a most pleasant surprise.

Help make The Auteurs totally awesome over 3 years ago

Contradicting others, I hate the idea of avatars on forum pages. It looks clean the way it is now. Clean and purty.
As with Citizen Spain, I’d love the ability to scroll favorites, like Amazon has on their product pages (for related items).
And please add more pictures, directors, and films to select from.
This site is GREAT.

Criterion junkies here? over 3 years ago

I’m a Criterion junkie, and there isn’t a soul I know that isn’t aware of it. Because of the expense, I’ve viewed most through Netflix, although I own a few of my faves. I hope to purchase more as time goes on…though it sure would be nice to get some for the upcoming holiday. My friends never get my dropped hints!

the hate corner over 3 years ago

Kevin Smith exists because of his legion of loyal fan boys. I’ve endured their praises of KS for twelve years, since some friends first showed me Clerks. Where I was completely indifferent about KS before, now I’m totally turned off. Make that a double for all the Star Wars movies.

I can’t leave without mentioning Bottle Rocket – talk about a turd in the punch bowl.

The most beautiful films? over 3 years ago

What Criterion films, or any others for that matter, would you consider to be the most beautiful? I’m referring to storyline, dialogue, score, scenery, framing, the actors themselves, etc all rolled into one pretty package. Though I already have a few picks of my own, I’d like to know your recommendations for future pleasurable viewing activity.

The most beautiful films? over 3 years ago

Thanks for all the great recommendations so far, everyone!
Catherine, I was not as impassioned by My Blueberry Nights as other WKW films, but it was still lush in its own way.
I’m also a big fan of Children of Paradise. Gorgeous.

Anybody else hate the Dark Knight? over 3 years ago

MR E 2 ME, Maggie Gyllenhall wasn’t any better.
TDK was too long, and Bale’s death-metal voice drove me up the wall.
But it was still an entertaining action movie. I just wouldn’t place it anywhere near the top films of all time.

CONFESSIONS--FILMS YOU ARE ASHAMED TO SAY YOU HAVE NOT SEEN (YET) over 3 years ago

The 400 Blows, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Citizen Kane, off the top of my head.
I’m persistently making my way through the Criterion Collection, and there’s still plenty of other films to see from the past and present.

Guilty Pleasures over 3 years ago

Phantasm, Cry Baby, Dream For An Insomniac, Disorderlies, Ever After, Midnight Madness, The Last Dragon, The Golden Child……I could probably recite every line to Coming to America, Breakin’, and Breakin II: Electric Boogaloo.

And most embarrassing…wait for it…P.S. I Love You.

I have aired out all my dirty laundry for ya’ll to see.

In the Mood for Love. They’re both exquisite in their own way, but ITMFL is the more subtle, delicate, and sympathetic of the two.

Who do you think had it and lost it? When? and Why? over 3 years ago

Tim Burton, since at least Planet of the Apes. I wonder how he’s going to butcher Alice in Wonderland.
