I’m from Portugal and I really wish that Brazil and Ivoire Coast qualify for the next round. I can’t stand Cristiano, is a spoiled child, wish that somebody breaks his legs.
I don’t like Di Maria either but I’ll support Argentina to win
there’s also a mubi in Portugal http://mubi.pt/
Very disappointing.. they are screwing this scene, just like facebook
At least they could have given to the users the option to choose/suggest something
@ Blue can’t wait to see your homework monday, I recently watched the two of the last Barta’s movies, with Paulo Branco as producer, and I liked a lot, the way how he portraits animals and landscapes is impressive, but is a though decision indeed
“The characters are afflicted with a contagious form of metaphorical aphasia and catatonia” – that was great =) Blue has done a nice introduction. This film is great and full of symbolism.
I just want to share 2 thoughts.
I saw the kid as a personification of a young state, fighting and trying to get out of the mud, it gave me the impression of a process of self awareness, a conflict of identity between a devastated village and his opressor (perhaps a soviet superego).
Second, I was really surprised when I heard fado, the first song when all are drinking in the kitchen.
I searched in youtube but this was the best version I could find: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Do4zMx5qk
There’s also a political issue in this popular song, where portuguese villagers, living near the border with Spain, claim for idependence to the saint of Almortão, they ask her to turn her back to the spanish reing of castela, “you don’t want to be castellana”.
Well, Good luck for the cup!
Bartas deserves more recognition
I was pleased to see both but Bruno’s magnetism is stronger.
Thank you Jon for your Shimizu selection, I’m curious about his work.
And thank you Adam for making me change my mind, I used to have a bad impression about Herzog
My appologies for being a kind of alexithymic sheep but I’ll give a try and speek some english.
I don’t think that sindbad is a GREAT movie but I can recognize that has some good ideas, maybe because it was the first time I saw Don Giovanni getting retired and nowadays that’s impossible cause viagra exists.
Jerry, I fancy the way how you use sarcasm and express your opinions but you don’t need to be so rude, you can try to figure out other points of view, did you or not enjoyed anything in particular?
Francis Ford Coppola (The Rain People) – 0 vs Kōji Wakamatsu (Go Go Second Time Virgin) – 1
Both were amazing discoveries for me.
In Rain People I’ve enjoyed very much how Shirley Knight performed the despair of a young girl that cannot cope with her feelings but showed a great sense of maternal protection. I liked the color and the editing but was an unsatisfying ending.
In Go Go Second Time Virgin loved the songs, the punks, the blood and their sick minds =)
Orson Welles (Othello) – 0 vs Mikio Naruse (When a Woman Ascends the Stairs) – 1
I do believe ‘twas one of the best Welles’
but my speech will fall into Naruse success.
I confess it is my shame to be so fond,
but it is not in my virtue to amend it.
WWATS is a masterpice. Naruse brings questions not only about woman emancipation but also about love, indebtedness, creditors, stocks, alcoholism, ulcers, polio, suicide.. It has a GREAT cast, the contribution of the musician Toshiro Mayuzumi and Takamine Hideko is very charming.
Aki Kaurismäki (Drifting Clouds) – 1 vs Jan Švankmajer (Conspirators of Pleasure) – 0
Not so easy. Švankmajer in his best but I didn’t like the pervertion of the mailwoman.
I found Kaurismäki’s humor very clever, want to see him in the next round.
theauteurs used to be and is a great community where a lot of users keep showing a full commitent to improve the best for the site. I can give a try and translate for portuguese or even spanish but I never liked to see the titles translated, some of them are simply horrible and nonsense. I’ll appreciate a lot if is kept the original and english title.
And last but not less important, now we are talking about money, about mubi and palystation, and what are you offering? Exploitation?
Takashi Miike (Visitor Q) – 1 vs Stan Brakhage (Black Ice) – 0
I cannot belive, 2 or 3 min of subjective material beating this gem? I don’t mean to despise Brakhage’s contributions to cinema but not even if the celluloid was painted with crude oil.
Krzysztof Kieślowski (Camera Buff) 1 – Peter Watkins (The War Game) 0
Now you can send an atomic bomb to Portugal, I’m not afraid anymore :)
That was a nice “doc”, both great selections but I prefer Amator.
The story of the midget man was touching, the reference to Károly Makk’s Love lovely and Zanussi seems to be another great revelation imo.
Dimitris for President Now! ! !
Do they care about theusers now? Dim was always there for everyone!
Come on, who can get offended with him, seriously?! He just has a great sense of humor :/
Agnès Varda (Salut les Cubains) 0 – Shūji Terayama (Farewell To the Ark) 1
As a venezuelan I enjoy very much all about the latin culture and Agnes captured it in a special way, thank you Ally. But I must confess I love japanese cinema and Terayama is a strong candidate to dispute with a good performance all the tournament and win the cup.
His most controversial film is branca de neve, you can’t imagine how people felt leaving the cinema after watching long takes in black, I assume it was a joke.
I’m looking foward to know his work better, I saw only veredas and à flor do mar.
In veredas he captured beautiful landscapes, he portraited well some old cultural and mystical traditions of portuguese villagers and did a political/poetic reflection, sort of iliad and satire about repressive authorities.
À flor do mar is filmed in Tavira (south Portugal – Algarve), also beautiful scenario, the perfect athmosphere to relax and spend your holidays, the most exciting thing imo is the mix of languages, with dialogues in portuguese, italian and english. You can see Teresa Villaverde acting.
JCM appeared in both films doing comic characters.
