The most overrated, pretentious, badly acted piece of pseudo-intellectual trash I’ve ever had the misfortune to see. Chole Sevigny prostitued herself in this. But, hey, what do I know?
Thet Powell and Pressburger one’s great, I got it a couple of Christmases ago along with the David Lean Centenary Collection, containing The Sound Barrier, Hobson’s Choice, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Madeleine, The Passionate Friends, This Happy Breed and In Which We Serve.
This year I got the Ealing Studios collection: Champagne Charlie, Dead of Night, Hue & Cry, It Always Rains on Sunday, Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Ladykillers, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Maggie, The Magnet, The Man in The White Suit, Nicholas Nickelby, Passport To Pimlico, Scott of The Antarctic, The Titfield Thunderbolt, Went The Day Well? and Whisky Galore.
Being a Transformers fan since my early childhood, I was pleasantly surprised by Bay’s first movie and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. However, there were moments (Bumblebee ‘leaking’ onto John Turturro, the Autobots attempting to hide around the house) which made me feel that Bay wasn’t quite taking the material as seriously as I’d have liked… come Revenge of the Fallen, with Transformer testicles, Transformers acting like randy dogs, and grumpy Transformers farting (not to mention the twins…) and my fears were confirmed. He might be a good action director, but his style is just too heavy handed and completely lacking in subtlety.
Oh, sure, you could argue that the films are only based on a toyline and are never meant to be anything other than braindead entertainment, but for those of us with years invested in the world and the characters, it’s rather insulting that Bay comes along and stomps all over our memories with his heavy handed, disrespectful and OTT style. If only they’d given to job to Robert Zemeckis…
There’s a lot more violence in Murphy’s death, a fair few more closeups and extended shots of violence. Incidentally, the first version of Robocop I saw was a TV efit, which removed ALL the violence and EVERY SINGLE swear word. It was hilarious and I desperately want a copy…
01. Film – Goodfellas
02. Director – Alfred Hitchcock
03. Book – either American Psycho or The Catcher in the Rye.
04. Author – Clive Barker
05. Painting – The Scream
06. Painter – HR Giger
07. Song – Everybody Hurts, REM
08. Band/Singer – Radiohead
09. Composer (classical) – Mozart
10. Piece of music (classical) – Ride of the Valkyries (thanks to Apocalypse Now)
Goodfellas. It’s my favourite movie for one thing, but I think it’d be great to die just as Joe Pesci fires into the camera and Sid Vicious starts his version of My Way…
