MARK THIMIJAN Below is a short description: This theater, located in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood, once sat over 1000, and opened in 1927. It stood on Fenkell Street at the corner of Blackstone Street. The Irving was designed by the firm of Kohner & Payne, whose other Detroit movie houses included the Uptown and the John Eberson-inspired Ramona, both long gone. After a long life as a first-run theater, the Irving turned to adult fare in the 70s, and continued to screen adult features into the 90s before it closed. The former theater most recently housed a church, but had been vacant for the past couple of years. In May 2007, the building was destroyed in a fire.

Where is that marquee? I just finished Berlin Alexanderplatz this past weekend and was completely blown away. I watched it over the course of a couple of months.

I agree that movies are intended to be viewed on a big screen in a dark room...but at the same time today's typical movie-going experience seems to discourage movie going what with the prices, the inability to properly frame a picture on a screen, etc., etc. Still what with DVD....this is the greatest era ever to be a movie fan.

I thank heaven for Criterion all boutique sellers who serve the smaller market. My greatest fear is that people will stop going to see all these wonderful films in the theatre. No matter how great the transfer or how many extras, nothing compares with seeing any film on the big screen. As we move into the future it's becoming harder for programmers to justify booking the old classics of Bergman or Fellini because people don't show up like they use to.A shout out-go, see a film at a local museum or theatre and help keep alive all these films the way they were meant to seen.
