Hi, I’m Ryan and I’m 12 years old. I’m only starting to get into Kurosawa, Fellini, Antoinoni, and Truffaut. Could I get suggestions for some essential films from these directors?
Thx guys! I’ve already seen Seven Samurai and Rashomon, I love them. And Kifah, it doesn’t sound condescending. And a random recommendation: See King of Comedy by Scorsese, De Niro and Lewis are fantastic.
I agree, 2001: A Space Odyssey is probably the best open-ending ever. Can’t hurt to throw in There Will Be Blood. There’s like 10 billion possible interpretations.
I’ve already “studied” Scorsese, saw Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, King of Comedy, Shine a Light Aviator, and Departed. Trying to see Kundun and Mean Streets.
No Altman or Fuller. Welles I’ve seen Citizen Kane, Third Man (even though he didn’t direct it), Magnificent Amberson, Touch of Evil, and Transformers: The Movie, lol.
10. Pulp Fiction
9. Toy Story
8. Apocalypse Now
7. A Clockwork Orange
6. E.T.
5. Empire Strikes Back
4. Goodfellas
3. Once Upon A Time In America
2. Casablanca
1. The Godfather Parts I & II
Littlerifi: Seen the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!
Scott: I loved the book Fahrenheit 451, I’ll check out the movie.
Michael: I saw Battleship Potemkin, I actually hated it. The stairs sequence was excellent and probably set the stage for Godfather and The Untouchables. But it was boring and preachy.
Pooch: Seeing Slumdog on Friday. Trying to catch Rachel Getting Married.
Okay,
So I’m considering seriously the following deal.
I’d be giving up the Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection, which includes one-discs editions of Saboteur, Shadow of a Doubt, Rope, Rear Window, The Trouble With Harry, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, Marnie, Torn Curtain, Topaz, Frenzy, and Family Plot.
In exchange, I’d be receiving 2-disc Universal Legacy Series versions of Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho, a 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of North by Northwest, and the Criterion Collection versions of Les Diaboliques and The Lady Vanishes.
Another thing worth mentioning is that I’ve seen all the films on the Masterpiece Collection and would readily give up about half (the ones I’m hesistant on are Shadow of A Dobut, Rope, Rear Window, Vertigo and Psycho)

I’ve already seen from Kubrick:
- Clockwork Orange – easily in my top 10
- 2001
- Full Metal Jacket
- Shining
- Dr. Strangelove
So essentially I’ve seen the bare essentials. He’s top 3 for my favorite directors, w/ Coppola and Scorsese.

Think of The Godfather I & II melded into one 5 1/2 hour epic. Thats THE perfect movie, no question.

Finished Seven Samurai yesterday – ungodly good. It’s interesting how many action movie cliches it’s set up. Mifune is intense,
Rashomon is probably one of my favorites – 100000x better than that rip-off Vantage Point.
Trying to get my hands on Shoot the Piano Player, Jules et Jim, 400 Blows La Dolce Vita, and 8 1/2.
And interestingly enough The Dark Knight is one of my faves – best movie so far this year.
I write movie reviews for my local papers in Michigan, so I’ve wanted to get my hands on the classics.

Saw Citizen Kane, 2001, Third Man, Grapes of Wrath, Rashomon. Juliet of the Spirits is Fellini? Okay, so I have seen some Fellini.

Don’t worry – I am a GIANT hip-hop/rock fan. Just cuz I like to study film doesn’t mean Kanye West and The Beatles aren’t my faves.

By the way, the bonus features and spiffed up prints on the Universal Legacy Series DVDs are the main reason I want them.

Yes, the recent Universal re-issues are excellent, far superior in picture, audio, features and packaging to all previous versions.
