Fargo. Perhaps the most painful movie I’ve ever watched. I actually don’t like the Coen Brother’s all that much. The only Coen Bro’s movie I can stomach is Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Other than that. I wish they’d stop making movies all together.
I’m not a “junky” I can’t afford to be, but I am a huge fan. I got hooked on Crits after I saw the Seventh Seal for the first time. It wasn’t the movie that got me, but the extras. I’m a sucker for the extras. I’ve got about 70 or so at home. I had a fellow Crit enthusiast friend and we’d trade back and forth and have hours-long conversations about the films we’d see, but sadly he moved away. Now we yack back and forth over instant messaging.
To be honest, Crits have changed the way I look at the world. Sometimes I find myself wondering “how would I shoot this for a movie?” That never happend until I started watching Crits.
Yeah, they’re expensive, but damn are they worth it!
The Cassavetes’ box set is, by far, the best investment in my dvd collection I have ever made. It is a lynch pin in my collection. I blind bought it. Constant Forge is just an amazing doc. I haven’t been able to get through Opening Night, though. Woman Under the Influence… rips the heart out. Its such an amazing film and its so hard to watch, not because its bad, but but because it is so good. I think KIlling of a Chinese Bookie is my favorite of the box set.
Yeah, I’d vote for more Cassavetes in the collection.
oh, one more, I’d like to see Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets. He deserves at least one film in the collection. They trot him out and interview him often enough! lol
the opening credits to Se7en. talk about setting mood!
the library scene in Se7en when morgan freeman is researching the seven deadly sins.
the “ear scene” in Reservoir Dogs, that camera pull away at the last moment, genius.
Russian Arc in its entirety. as well as Spirit of the Beehive (most beautiful movie I own).
the Grand Central Station dance scene in Fisher King
Eraserhead is one of those movies that I can say I saw, but I’ve ever quite gotten the “allure” of it. I, personally believe it is overhyped and a bit overrated.
Ron, don’t let them get to you. I’m a relative newcomer to classic cinema as well. I’ve learned a lot about movies, films, cinema in general from just reading posts and watching films.
That said: I believe Spirit of the Beehive is absolutely perfect. It is visually stunning and the story flows so well.
my reaction is usually delayed. but i usually find myself thinking about the film for days after watching it. a film that I have just recently decided was “great” was Closely Watched Trains. that one just stayed with me.
Thought, you’re so right. I’ve tried to watch it again. But once that panwhistle starts to flow through the soundtrack i get jittery. 3 Women is another movie that I don’t think I’ll be able to watch again. it was just a creepy, uncomfortable movie. it took me two years to go back and rewatch Short Cuts. that’s no so much creepy as just really sad to me, all those broken people.
I work at BN and I also have a member card. I wait until I get a 25 percent off coupon, add that with my member card and they usually aren’t that badly priced. I also netflix ’em. Ebay, too.
i have to be careful with cassavetes. every time i watch one of the films in that box set, my brain is turned on in ways i didn’t know were possible. every time i watch constant forge i want run out, get camera and film and start making movies. Faces is so dark. the first time i watched Faces was like being smacked in the head. it was the laughter, that sad, masking-the-hurt laughter that really did me in. watching Woman Under the Influence is a test of endurance. that film just gets to the heart of it, you know. Chinese Bookie? can’t even begin to describe that one. the only film in the set that I’m not enamored with is Opening Night. I haven’t been able to get into that one.
Best scene in the movie is the men watching Oja walk through the square. Oh, and the little boy on the train platform as Orwell does his magic. probably one of my favorite Crits ever.
I can’t agree with the haters of The Rock. That was a Genre busting movie. It took the action movie and turned it on its head. Armageddon? That one I can agree with.
My pick for worst Crit would have to be Grey Gardens. ugh, I’ll never get that time back.
I’m sure this topic somewhere in here, or at least something similar to it. If so, I couldn’t find it. Which do you think is better? PF or RD? why?
I tend to lean more toward RD. PF seems a bit more contrived, like Tarrantino was TRYING too hard. i put RD first, but PF is a very close second. thoughts?
hey all, Barnes & Noble has a sale going on the month of Feb on all DVDs: buy 2 get one free! This is not an ad (full disclosure: I work for BN), its a heads up! I used my member card and got another 10 percent off… i went for broke and got 6 Crits (for a total of 130 bucks).
Hopscotch
Fires on the Plain
Vengeance is Mine
Chungking Express
Europa
Vampyr
I did the math, and with the Buy 2 Get 1 plus my member card it came to just over 120 bucks. I got six titles (see above) so that comes out to about 20 bucks a piece. I’d say that’s not bad at all.
here’s the best way to make it work for you: buy three of the same price. three 39.99 (automatically get 10% off). i bought three 39.99 disks and three 29.99 disks. used my member card and got another ten percent off each title.
i don’t think you can use the coupons. if you can more power to you, but technically i don’t think they are supposed to be used in conjunction with the sale.
The first Criterion I saw was The Seventh Seal. It was right around the time the director died, just before, I think. I had decided that I needed to conversant in at least one of his films, and I had at least heard of that one. I rented it from a Blockbuster. I was hooked by Crits when I watched the demonstration regarding refurbishing the print. I found that more interesting than the movie!
But in hindsight the first movie I saw that was in the collection was Hard Boiled, in college, it was a VHS. Two Vietnamese students across from the hall from me watched it all the time. The funny this is this: I couldn’t understand a word of it because it wasn’t subtitled in English. It was subtitled in French and Vietnamese, though.
The first Crit I bought was, I think, Branded to Kill.
I freely admit, I’m an addict! I"ve got, I think, 75 or 80 in my collection.
