The 40% off sale was a God send.. I was able to order 21 titles and fill in some gaps in my collection. I am at the point now where I rarely buy non Criterion dvds anymore.. i get those from NetFlixx, and if a non Criterion is REALLY good (ie, the Director’s Cut of ‘Zodiac’), i’ll buy it.
agreed, and several people asserted your very pint on the Gawker site. I just posted here as a topic of discussion. Criterion has never been about affordability, per se… its been about quality, and quality costs. As you may see in an earlier reply of mine in another forum, I rarelybuy non Criterion releases anymore unless its a great film, with a great package of extras (Criterion-like, perhaps).
they did have a Christmas sale, sort of, a few weeks ago.. I got lucky and directed to pals who I swap gifts with to head over, so I got 10 new titles coming my way, plus I bought 6… whoo-hoo!
i watched this last night, and i have to say, i found it VERY hard, even with Fuller directing, to take a film with Kristy McNichol seriously… the film is almost TOO dated looking (sadly, racism is as prevelent today.. but I digress), with Kristy running around looking like an Olivia Newton-John ‘Physical’ video clone. 2 stars.
nicely put, andrew.
i am considering this film one of Criterion’s (few) mis-steps ;-) While I can ‘appreciate’ Criterion’s interest in making the film available, my appreciation stops there. I have 300+ Criterion’s, and for completion’s sake, I will eventually add this to my shelf, but it’ll be waaaaaaaay down the road, and most definately will only purchase it with a deep DEEP discount coupon, or used.
i am with you, LOOFRIN… i’ve come back to the film several times over the years, thinking somehow my tastes have changed, I had become more of sophisticated cinemaphile blah blah blah, and each time (5 or 6, now), same response: Whaaaaaaaatevvvvver.
Roger: I have a bunch of Criterions (about 300+, and am working on catching up). I do not own Salo. I was speaking recently with another Criterion buff, and I told him Salo, for me, was like The Exorcist for some in the 70’s: (I saw it once, and for AGES, I could recall scenes with the precision of a DP that would literally nearly make me queasy.) I know its been re-issued, I am uncertain if I will ever buy it.. I DESPISE the hole that my non-ownership leaves in my/Criterions numbering system, and when it was OOP my attitude was ‘Oh well, its going for $165 on ebay’, but now that it is available again, I believe that it is one film in the collection I might be willing to just ignore buying, and get over my anal retentiveness (funny term, considering the film I am talking about!). I’ve read essay after essay about the film, and I get it, I just don’t want to go out and get it.
haha.. my partner said EXACTLY that about Criterion releasing Armageddon… oddly, i always felt that Amy & Armagedon were titles Criterion released because it might have made them some ‘mainstream’ dvd buyer money. I have no basis for this opinion whatsoever, but it did cross my mind. Anyone else agree ? Disagree ? (New thread ? hahaha)

Baumbauch: ‘Mr Jealousy’ is very good, everything else of hisI perfer the SOUNDTRACKS to the films than the actual movies themselves. Dude has good taste in tuneage. (Luna! Evie Sands!… awesomeness)
BTW: ‘Multiple Cockup’ sounds like a gay porn film title. Someone needs to contact Falcon asap
i’ve got a BUNCH of unopened Criterion titles (without naming titles, I think the fact that they are Criterions establishes my point). I bought them, and I will get to them, but have not as of yet. In fact, I watched a ahem new release Hollywood ‘comedy’ the other night from Netflix and as it flickered on my screen, I thought I could hear my unopened Criterion titles weep for the wasted time. ‘You should be watching me! yelled Young Torless.. ’Open me, let me breathe, turn ’STEP BROTHERS’ off!’ begged Kagemuska. Sometimes you just go for the fluff.
don’t be hating on The Blob, it’ll get you. But seriously, as a film, I think it holds up, and is a great example of what America was watching in the 50’s.
Star Wars. I snuck off ALONE to see it whilest on summer vacation in Bangor, Maine 1977. I was barely 12, and it took me 2 busses to get to the theater across town in a city I had never been in before, in a blistering heatwave. I simply had to see it. I lived in a small Canadian town at the time, and KNEW it would be ages before it played at home. I had to see it so when school started, I could gloat. So I did, And I did. But boy oh boy, did I get yelled at when I got back to the motel later that day, but it was TOTALLY worth getting grounded the rest of the summer. :-)

I’ll second ‘GINGER SNAPS’, Tros.
And on the other end of the scale, ‘AWAY FROM HER’… I got an actual headache from crying silent tears of heartbreak watching Christie and Pinsent’s pitch perfect performances ( Sorry, I tried to reword that last phrase, it’s too sing songy and cliched, but it works).
Brokeback Mountain. I saw it early, well before the hype etc.. I’m very close to a married (to a woman) man who is gay, and struggles evey day to honor his commitment to her and raise his kids. Because of that deeply personal relationship, that film spoke to me on such a level I felt like I was betraying his secret just by watching it.
i replied to an earlier posting …. AWAY FROM HER.. I literally was choked up and had tears from (almost) frame 1. And in Brokeback Mountain, the last scene with Ledger and that shirt.

the extras were interesting, with a funny/sad story how Burl Ives, being rather old, kept forgetting his lines even with the help of cue cards
