I find it extremely moving and true in its simplicity. And formally it seems there is not a word, not a movement, not a look, not a frame, not an edit extra or out of place.
Herzog remaking anything is bound to be, at the very least, interesting. Nothing lacking in Ferrara’s original though, I was thoroughly entranced when it came out. Nick Cage, however much I like him when he has a good role, can’t stand up to Keitel in this part…but no one could.
These are all great directors. Goddard is almost the opposite of Bergman. Goddard is perhaps the most cinematic of filmmakers. In fact it was watching a lot of his films recently that made me realize that Bergman’s film are not really cinematic. They are more theatrical, script based. Bergman had always been my favorite film maker, but recently I prefer to watch Goddard, Bresson, Tarkovsky and Antonioni, all of whom I think are more cinematic than Bergman.
At this point I would consider Mirror a masterpiece among masterpieces. After that: Andrei Rublev, Sacrifice, Stalker, Solaris, are all great in different ways.
I like her films a lot. They are, by and large, extremely challenging and disturbing. And Fat Girl is indeed horrific, perhaps more so than any of her other films. But if Breillat keeps making them, I’ll keep watching.
