but what of those who rationally hated it before it won the Oscar? we're, well, we're geniuses.
"Anger, depression, and sorrow are beautiful things in a story, but they're like poison to the filmmaker or artist. They're like a vice grip on creativity. If you're in that grip you can hardly get out of bed, much less experience the flow of creativity and ideas. You must have clarity to create." - From his book, Catching the Big Fish.
I think I hated this movie.
Beautiful, incredible. Sounds like hyperbole but this was pretty overwhelming on a personal level.
fuck 3d, im holding out for the SUPER 3d edition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJxj1mou03M
Kino will be doing a DVD/Blu-Ray release of Day of the Fight, The Flying Padre, Fear and Desire, and The Seafarers. Stoked!
Best moment comes from a story that starts with golf and squirrels, and ends with an tearful recollection of death and the sanctity of life. Moving in a way only Herzog can do.
I just want Brie Larson to be my girlfriend.
haven't seen the whole thing, but I saw the fire extinguisher scene the day after I boxed with a friend and he fucked up my nose and lips......my face throbbed like a motherfucker. Gaspar Noe, man.
great for a number of reasons, but the ending felt incredibly out of place. otherwise, very worthwhile stuff.
so great, Discovery was the first CD I ever bought.
bought the Kino blu ray awhile back without even realizing this was on there....
don't really care for this band anymore, but it would still be cool to see the Drive Well, Sleep Carefully doc on here.
so bad its still bad. Doesn't change the fact that this song gets like 20 stars out of 5....
Bizarre and kind of beautiful. Not surprising to see the negative reactions though.
dude looks like a motherfucking skateboarder in this picture.
It's even more surprising to learn this cost more than $100,000.....
a perfectly pleasant and enjoyable movie that will be irrationally hated by everyone on this site for its Oscar win.
but what of those who rationally hated it before it won the Oscar? we're, well, we're geniuses.
the music he is making now pretty much sucks but that Zola Jesus remix he did is really something great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieAanBejN5A
Good film, but that dubbing was fucking terrible.
I've always had a fascination with Chernobyl and Pripyat since seeing a photo of the power plant in a 4th grade textbook. It always seemed so ominous, and I guess playing the Stalker video games and listening to Jacob Kirkegaard's 4 Rooms didn't help. This gave me the humanistic touch I was looking for.
lets get The Devil in the Heart on here.
He directed the Clint Eastwood commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. Interesting.
"I don't wanna talk about trees anymore. All I know is, I wanna make love with you."
Affecting but so damn frustrating. I love Ramsey's approach and the way she tells this story, but I feel like she becomes heavy handed at times and the story grows tiresome (I find it hard to believe parents would overlook some of the stuff Kevin was doing). Still theres a lot of clever filmmaking in this one, its just too bad that it severely tapers off after the strong first hour or so.
Disappointing because House of the Devil was so memorable and refreshing and this was very far away from either of those things. Oh well, I guess not every movie can have a scene where Jocelin Donahue dances around a creepy house to The Fixx.
Theres a lot of interesting stuff going on here, but I can't help but be bothered by the generic depictions of trauma in films like this (and the baffling praise actors get for it). I have been around enough trauma victims in real life to know it is not always expressed the same way, and I'd love to see more mainstream films come at it from a different angle. Its an esoteric complaint, but a complaint, nonetheless.
From Lynch to bullshit like Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City. Come on dude.
On top of it all, I've heard he regretted doing Showgirls. I want to think he was little more than an avatar, a nearly perfect projection of Lynch's inner self, but I'm not sure that would be fair. He did play one of the best TV characters of all time, after all. It's just an incredible shame that he never worked with Lynch beyond Fire Walk With Me...
Jeff Nichols: "I finally had something to lose. The anxiety grew out of that. Not to mention, shit was going crazy: Bush was in the White House, the economy was collapsing, there were wars everywhere, towns were getting destroyed by storms. It was just like, what’s going on? It felt like the world at large was losing its grasp of keeping everything together. That was just in the air. It still is."
Much has been made of Drive borrowing from Thief, but I would find it hard to believe that Refn wasn't watching this and taking notes on how to effectively shoot Los Angeles. Thankfully, he didn't borrow the Audioslave music cue.
we'll all fall down and weep....because Keldon finally cleared out a night to sit down and rewatch this and the disc turned out to be defective and stopped halfway through. Motherfucker.
