She is a beautiful, silent outsider who’s moved to this Sicilian town to be with her husband, Nico. He promptly goes off to war, leaving her to the lustful eyes of the men and the sharp tongues of the women. During the next few years, as Renato grows toward manhood, he watches Malèna suffer and prove her mettle. He sees her loneliness, then grief when Nico is reported dead, the effects of slander on her relationship with her father, her poverty and search for work, and final humiliations. A tale of three women who have reached a turning point in their lives. Delia is a spirited, working-class woman from a small town in New York who leaves her abusive husband and sets out on a journey to reclaim the power she has lost. Greta is a sharp, spunky editor who is rotten with ambition. To spite the hated infidel ways of her father, she has settled into a complacent relationship and is struggling (not too hard) with issues of fidelity to her kind but unexciting husband. Finally Paula, who ran away from home and got pregnant, is now in a relationship she doesn’t want. She’s a troubled young woman who takes off on a journey with a hitchhiker after a strange, fateful encounter on a New York street. — IMDb (Written by Sujit R. Varma)

When I first heard of the Criterion Collection years ago, I was under the assumption that the main perks of buying the DVDs were the transfers and the special features.
1. City of God
2. Whale Rider
3. Hable con ella
4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
5. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
6. The Dreamers
7. Pan’s Labyrinth
8. Snatch
9. Requiem for a Dream
10. Head-On
Yeah, I ordered the OOP copy of Vivre sa vie probably three months before Criterion announced its release under their label. I can’t say I regret getting it, though. One of my favorite Godard films. Especially the ending.
So, I know Sergei Paradjanov is probably the premier Georgian filmmaker and I just happened upon Yuri Ilyenko who, according to his biography, was a premier Ukrainian director. My question for you cinephiles out there would be: “Who were the premier filmmakers of the Soviet Socialist Republics during Soviet rule?”
I know this seems like a strange question, but I’m very curious.
Here’s a list of the former SSRs
Armenian
Azerbaijan
Byelorussian
Estonian
Georgian – Paradjanov?
Kazakh
Kirghiz
Latvian
Lithuanian
Moldavian
Russian – Tarkovsky?
Tajik
Turkmen
Ukrainian – Ilyenko?
Uzbek
Thanks Matt! I appreciate your recommendations and shall begin exploring soon! I, luckily, have Mother by Pudovkin, so I’m off to a good start already.
I was hoping for one of that shot, with the main focus on her face. The other shot I wouldn’t mind having a large still of would be the one that’s on the cover of the Criterion DVD, only the full photo, with no text, where she has her hand on her brother’s back, with her head turned to her right, on his shoulder, and her eyes closed.
I saw West Side Story and On the Waterfront when I was very young and I remember being moved by them. Then I saw The Godfather movies and GoodFellas when I was in middle school, which introduced me to “R-rated” cinema, for the most part. So, those were movies that held my interest in film, but the one that changed my perspective completely was Bergman’s Viskningar och rop (Cries and Whispers). The first time I saw it, I don’t think I knew exactly what to think when it was over, so I watched it again, and it just spoke to me. I was profoundly moved by everything on the screen, by every sound, and I knew that I would never watch movies the same way again. So, those were movies that helped me get to where I am today.
I find Window Water Baby Moving very touching. I’ve only seen four of Brakhage’s films to this point (the others being The Riddle of Lumen, Mothlight, Desistfilm), but I was very moved by Window Water Baby Moving, more so than the others by a considerable degree.

Hey,
I’m trying to get a high resolution or, a large photo still from Through a Glass Darkly.
I found a website with the picture fairly large, but I couldn’t extract it.

Anyone know how to extract it, or where I could find a high-res photo like this?
