I thought it felt too staged, nonetheless the final 30 minutes were great. 8/10
The lighting in this film is incredible.
And I refer to the subject of love. @ Roger Hayn. Not too sure what you refer to in terms of dialogue, the dialogue is original and always engaging to me. In terms of emotional release there are some really beautiful moments, for example when they go dancing and Moscowitz does the hand stand. Or at the Ice Cream parlour. Humanism and realism have been done on film by many directors, and Cassavetes nails it here.
This is a sublime avant garde film of the american 70's. Beautiful dialogue, fantastic quick scene changes, brilliant close ups. Cassavetes has really created a true story, true to life. It surpasses anything I've seen on the subject personally.
Still have to see The New World but this so far is my favourite Malick film.
Some of the best cinematography of Bobby Muller's distinguished career right here. I can't imagine this being surpassed for its spot in my top ten any time soon. Jarmusch went mental with two supermasterpieces in three years.
Such a natural way of telling stories. Brilliantly edited and conceived.
Sublime film making. Some of the very best photography you will see.
One of Bunuel's finest and most under appreciated works. Very relevant commentary of the american situation.
I really do feel for Williams' character in this film
annie hall should be here, the fly and jurassic park are my favourite roles of Jeff.
of all the on-the-run films this one strikes me as the most compelling. Others tend to look outside and the way the public and the media reacts to the crimes. This is interior. Martin Sheen's character that Malick has created is marvellous, all the violence and killing without explanation or reason yet his character is still loveable and endearing.
Have you ever been in a turkish prison?
Seems this isn't as well received as the films Ozu would make afterwards. I thought this was a marvellous addition to his post war canon. Also, very surprised by the scene on the stairs at the end. Something very rare for Ozu. 9/10
I agree with what Cecil says. There is such a beautiful humanism to this film. A look or something a character does can make you smile or laugh in this film, that is what I love about Jarmusch and this film in particular, he doesn't patter about with ridiculous dialogue he justs shoots reality. That is what makes this film my favourite over all.
Some have commented on this film having bad acting, citing the main two characters as robotic. I have to say, it had some moments but overall I didn't notice this. The photography and music of this film is fantastic and in the final moments the film really comes together. I predicted the final hotel scene. To me this is an anti-authoritarian film critical of the power structures of Capitalist society.
@ Vlad. I wouldn't say the CNT are portrayed unfairly. Maybe their role is slightly marginalised but they are never portrayed in a bad light in my opinion.
excellent b-movie
Like all truly great psychological thrillers this film really affects you after you watch it, I just watched it another time right now and I can't bring myself to say anything. Iron's delivers one of the BEST performances EVER committed to celluloid. For some reason Dead Ringers reminds me of Polanski's The Tenant. Both directors being masters at manipulating their audience through psychology. This is on par with that masterpiece. 10/10.
Unsurprisingly disregarded by the mainstream. This film is a modern masterpiece. One of the finest films of the last 20 years, in the top 5 at the least. Incredible cinematography, the most visually striking Cronenberg film, accompanied by an incredible Howard Shore, maybe the best he did for Cronenberg, pulsating and haunting guitar flows throughout the whole film. As for the eroticism, it never goes too far, to me it is a study of human compulsions and how sex, just like any other intoxicant is used to escape from isolation in the real world. Sneaking anti-capitalist tendencies within the film. There is so much to think about. 10/10
I watched the film for the second time now and it is even better this time around. I feel i've come to a better understanding of it. Cronenberg's take on surrealism is fantastic and original. This will be considered in a better light by future generations I'm sure. 10/10
If John Carpenter had continued along the same lines as this. The Thing and Halloween he could have been somewhat of a modern day hitchcock. These three are incredibly atmospheric.
Bearcub, the only thing James Cameron is sincere about is making money. He's a lying plagiarising fuck wit of a film maker, he tarnishes the name of cinema. As does anything in film which works purely in the interest of capital.
My Love Has Been Burning should be here. It is a great film and truly feminist.
Those guys are retards! They brought their f***ing toys with them!
Pro-Capitalist propoganda. This film is an untrue depiction. Hardly strange when the German government partly funded this film.
One of the best films ever made. 10/10
Brilliant study of compulsion. 9/10
queen of the mods nailed it.
