Will go with ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ – I watch it every 6 months or so and am consistently amazed at its depth and complexity. Also I now have a soft spot for ‘Fear and Desire’, (just saw the pristine Eastman print), as it showcases many of Kubrick’s obsessions in a raw, almost half-baked state.
Just watched Hitchcock’s last, Family Plot, again yesterday. It’s lovely, whimsical with a witty, steady camera and genuine affection for its characters. And after all those years of bad things happening on staircases in Hitchcock films how nice to end with a character standing on that staircase, winking at the audience.

Sam Fuller with ‘Pickup on South Street’ – as he said to Herbert Hoover over lunch when Hoover complained the script was unpatriotic:
“You wavin’ the flag at me??!”
