About Me

5=Extraordinary
4=Great
3=Good
2=Mediocre
1=Shit

I only rate films that i’ve either just watched, or seen recently, in accordance with my own personal viewing standards, which are constantly changing. A film i may have given 5/5 10 years ago may only be worth 4 now, or perhaps even less, so i feel it’s important for my ‘judgement’ to reflect whatever evaluative criteria i’m consciously(or unconsciously) applying in the here and now. Otherwise it’s bound to be less accurate.

I also tend to rate according to genre, or to a director’s body of work(if applicable), so a 3/5 for a movie like ‘Little Nicky’ is not comparable to the same mark awarded to films like ‘Homicide’ or ‘The End Of Summer’, just in case you are wondering, which you probably aren’t.

I’m also into all kinds of different genres, but have obvious preferences towards the more ‘artistic’ end of the film spectrum, which i absolutely feel no shame about ;-)

I try to watch as much as possible though.

Ulysses' Gaze

Fun fact about Ulysses Gaze: Harvey fell asleep watching his first Angelopoulos film - in front of Theo!! According to Keitel, the story goes that he was sent the script for Ulysses Gaze but didn't know much about Angelopoulos and hadn't seen one of his films, which is quite understandable given the fact that he had only had one film released officially in the U.S at the time.

yes it is very good with interesting characters, think it gets too morbid at the end and does seem to run on a bit even being short. I saw this the day of my diagnosis, was probably not the best thing to see at that time but has grown on me.

Jesus, what the hell was Altman trying to achieve here exactly? Why did he assume that his quirky mix of long takes, ‘wandering zooms’, overlapping dialogue, and dingy set design ala McCabe would work…  read review

The epic-romantic-tragedy is not really De Sica’s bag. Sunflower was mediocre, and justifiably regarded as one of his lesser films. but it wasn’t totally without merit. The Voyage, on the other hand…  read review
