A great question. I referred to imdb to make sure I wasn’t forgetting anything, and I can safely say I agree with Karl; I always think of Stansfield in Leon first when I think of Gary Oldman.
Dear Cinephile Furgals*,
Borders = 30% entire DVD stock (including, of course, criterion as well as any boxed sets) through Sunday the 4th. It’s been going on for a week and a half, tomorrow just happens to be the last day. Annnnnd through the 7th, all DVDs are buy two get one free.
Love, your friendly neighborhood Borders employee.
*May I say, what a lovely accidental neologism. Cinefurgals, maybe?
Stale popcorn? Incorrectly timed laughter? Texting? David Lynch? You call that movie hell? May I introduce to you a guy named Joel, not too different than you or me…
Oh, sorry, I forgot we had a thing going here. Twin Peaks is like the codeine that your friend made you snort so you were like “Oh this is going to be okay, OH WAIT BRUTAL”
You still have the option to cancel your order since you haven’t physically received it. From the customer care page of Borders.com:
“Back-ordered items may be canceled at any time prior to entering the fulfillment process. To cancel a back-ordered item, please contact our Customer Care Department at 800.770.7811.”
I would say you are not likely to get your DVD any time soon, as some multimedia distributers are no longer dealing with Borders. Your money will be refunded as store credit, at which point you can erase the whole incident from your memory and order your DVD from Amazon. I’d recommend using your Borders credit on a hardcover copy of Atlas Shrugged or the OED, and then accidentally dropping it on the nearest Borders.com kiosk.
Have you ever related to a character’s situation, personality, world-view etc., then asked yourself how the film makers got inside your head? Which one?
I recently got caught up on my Italian post-war classics. Now I’m wondering whats come out of Italy in the past 30 or so years, any genre, good or bad, that’s worth watching. The more recent the better… say, 1980 and on. Any suggestions?
Wow, thank you for all the recommendations. I added everything from Ari & Grey Daisies’ lists to my Netflix queue, plus — how could I ignore that kind of praise from Glemaud? — the Wertmüller flick.
And Ari, I’ll have to check out those giallo threads, but I’d be happy to take your suggestions :)
I just finished reading Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem. It’s about an obsessive culture critic named Perkus Tooth with a tenuous grasp on reality who works for Criterion (it’s fiction, but it may as well not be. zing!). I found it very unsettling, and I thought this might be a good place to discuss it. Has anyone else read it?

I've never seen any David Lynch over 3 years ago
Twin Peaks (the show) is immediately likeable, on a lot of levels… and also big enough of an undertaking to crave some more Lynch once finished. $.02.

Here’s the San Francisco Chronicle’s review, if you’re interested.
